To finish up with May at Fake Rolex, we host a sometimes liquid, sometimes deep drumming selection from Elise (@el-se), a DJ that oscillates with prolific talent through genres as UK techno, electro, ghetto house, jungle and between. 

‘I did this podcast a month ago from now when we were still deep into the lockdown here in Paris. Like a lot of people, this period went with a lot of mixed feelings about the future, ups & downs. It was in a bit of a lull moment that I tried to share some kind of “floating acceptance” that I was into on that quarantine day 49’

After 5 years in the Shanghai local scene where she was involved as a DJ, live performer, and occasional promoter, Elise moved to Berlin to focus on her music production, releasing an EP at Man Band Records (2018)(@man-band). 

Now based in Paris, Elise continues to push her sound forward and signed an opening reshape on François X's new imprint Dement3d XXX (@dement3d), with some promising releases in the works as well as a monthly show on Rinse France (@rinse_france).

the first time i met Alex was at a distinctly non-attended radio livestream in 2012. he had just moved to york for uni, and although i was itching to move away from my hometown, i was so excited to meet someone else my age who clearly shared the same insatiable appetite for club music. 

though our paths within our thing split off over time, i really can't understate the influence he had on me in his friendship and support, in early years especially. for that (and much more), i will always love you, Alex.

how to pay tribute in one hour to a life lost premature ? an impossible task, and so i present this recording as one piece alone of an ongoing collective struggle to process the loss and celebrate the life of a fellow cosmic traveller who left us too soon.

although it wasn't intended as such, this recording reminds me of how we would often approach the first hour of On Rotation at the 212 café/bar in leeds - a chance to play the weirder sides of our record collection and freak out the post-work-drinks crowd (before moving into house music that they would have probably quite enjoyed)

it seems fitting that this would be the case for a recording that, like a warm-up, i hoped would sketch out a path for moving forward, while never forgetting the foundation upon which the future must rest. i think this was an important balancing act to Alex, and i hope this recording will do justice to that idea somehow. 

i could go on, and i have no doubt that i will in future - explicitly or otherwise. all of this is ultimately to say; i hope that you rest in peace, brother.

Test subject 1.14 @consulateultra transmits a recording both mystifying and unsettling. A journey that on the surface, makes no logical sense; just an underlying feeling that something isn't quite right. But therein lies its beauty. Juxtaposing sounds and deranged blends are selected with complete precision to generate points of anticlimax and confusion. Embrace the obscure.

"I found it really challenging. It took me three attempts and a bunch of false starts before I was happy with the mix. At first, I saw rope bridges; Mesoamerican symbology; a jungle, but thought doing a jungle mix was a bit blunt. After staring at it for far too long and coming up with dozens of conflicting interpretations, I realised that ‘disorientation’ prevailed. To convey this, I included tracks and artists from disparate time periods and genres to achieve something I hope is disorienting while retaining some sense of cohesion. During lockdown I’ve gone through stages of listening to a lot of music and then listening to none at all. I have managed to consume a lot of books, films and games in the last few months, so I drew some factor of inspiration from those mediums - Carl Jung, John Carpenter, WB Yeats and Robert W. Chambers all feature in audio form, while various other cinematic or thematic influences definitely informed its general direction." Consulate on navigating the image for his Manifestation mix.
