October has arrived, and the calendar change means cooler temperatures and darker music. The Weekend Showcase 3.38 edition reflects the new season, as there are several pulsating and brooding numbers. The mega-playlist features 55 songs from artists representing 14 countries, including: Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Scotland, South Korea, Sweden, the United States, and Wales.

The sonic equivalent of standing on a beach as a tidal wave approaches, listening to IRESS is to be aware of certain devastation, yet grateful to witness something so terrifyingly beautiful, and transfixed in anticipation for whatever happens next.

Formed in Los Angeles in 2010, IRESS employ dark, commanding elements of shoegaze, slowcore and metal, swelling in moments of cinematic-like crescendo.  Dubbed the “Adele of Doom” by her local LA music peers, frontwoman Michelle Malley’s vocals have the power to envelop with smokey warmth, destroy with anguished belting, and arrest with unbelievable restraint.  Bassist, Michael Maldonado, provides the much-needed anchor in the bewitching melodies and reverb, while drummer, Glenn Chu, pushes unrelentingly forward.  Guitarist, Graham Walker, joined in 2022 instigating a new, more collaborative way of working for the band.  This chemistry is undeniable on stage as the intentionality applied to live performances leaves audiences stunned to silence in moments, brought to tears in others when impaled by Malley’s emotional screams, all the while supplying a satisfying amount of crushing distortion to head bang through. 

The success of Iress’ newfound anatomy can also be heard in the exceptionally composed, staggering wave of doomgazey sound on the upcoming "Solace" EP, which tells the story of the brutal reality of change: inevitable, painful and beautiful.

Fehm are a post punk band from Leeds. Originally consisting of singer Paul Riddle, bassist Amy Fishlock, and drummer Chris Lodge. The band released their debut EP Circadian Life on Art is Hart Records in 2016. Shortly after members of fellow Leeds band Gundogs, Darren Lord on synths and Ben Holmes on guitar joined to complete the lineup. Since then the band have been earning acclaim for their live shows and working on new material.

The songs represent a transitional period for the band. The first songs written as a five piece, they demonstrate the beginnings of a new direction in Fehm's sound, experimenting further with electronic elements and fuller arrangements. They are being released as a double-A side digital single in Autumn 2017 to bridge the gap between Circadian Life and the bands forthcoming album, to be recorded in 2018.

Last Breath is about being surrounded by people at the end of their lives, when their sickness is too much to keep going but once you let go it's the end, you finally get the release you need but it's life's final bittersweet moment.

The EP was recorded, mixed and mastered with Matt Peel at the Nave recording studio in Leeds in 2017.
