"Trance Classics" is a brand which has been growing from strength to strength over the past 3 years. The significant time and effort spent by Darren Simpson and Mark Winstanley who have researched and educated the Trance scene on so many different releases has earned them a loyal following. It's a real pleasure to headline their 10,000 Likes celebration along with so many other Trance luminaries.   

What is a classic? Well, a textbook definition is "an outstanding example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with timeless quality". However, I'm sure that everyone has their own opinion of what constitutes a proper classic. It could be some of the biggest Trance anthems to have ever graced the dancefloor, those hidden gems which haven't been heard in countless years or discovering that oldskool treasure which you never knew existed!

Anyone who knows my thoughts on "classics", will know that firstly, I find the term slightly overused and secondly, I rarely if ever create exclusive mixes focused entirely on oldskool Trance. This set addresses all of that. 

Packed with 2 hours of surprises, sparkles and sunshine with enough ammunition to satisfy even the most devout Trance purist!

A clubbers guide to 1995. 

As in a real clubbers guide to 1995, rather than the Ministry of Sound CD series. This was a fantastic year for clubbing. After 1994 it felt like it couldn’t get much better. But 1995 saw some great tunes released, quality club nights were available everywhere and so many of us were having the time of our lives. I went through some records that I had from ’95 and put this one together as a reflection of some of the tunes that were big in clubs at the time - not the massive anthems that get played all the time but some of the big club tunes that haven’t appeared on tons of compilation CDs. I’ve done other mixes of the big vocal anthems from around 1995 but this mix is a little more underground.

This was the year that my clubbing exploits went well beyond the likes of Club UK and the Clockwork parties in London, as I discovered the clubs in the midlands and the north. Aged 20 I moved to Birmingham to become a student and regularly went to places like Wobble, Crunch, Fun, SLAG and Republica. Great times!

You can see how progressive house was a real influence in clubland during this year. There’s a nice build to this mix with things starting off upbeat and vocal, and then some lush progressive tunes, and a more banging ending. 

A few hisses, pops and clicks in here as this is a hybrid mix using some of my old vinyl and some digital files. One or two of the vinyl records in this are ‘well used’ hence the little imperfections in the sound – which I think adds a bit of warmth. Enjoy.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
