By all accounts, Japan is a must-stop destination for techno lovers, the wealth of sounds in its export ledger reveal a strong culture for parties and music production; from north to south, the country more than pulls its weight. A little known corner on the northernmost island of Hokkaido is home to this next guest. By now, OCCA’s a local fixture, whose galloping techno has fired up crowds at Future Terror, Gong, Exit the Labyrinth and Balance, as well as ravers from his very own Archiv parties held at legendary Sapporo mainstay Precious Hall. Intro over, now for the music: his techno is threatening and mercurial, an ever-mutating patchwork of frenzied rhythms and throbbing synths. Bassiani Podcast 184 is an hour of pure techno chaos, supercharged beats from this esoteric 4/4 master.

Based out of Lisbon, Vil & Cravo are the ice-cool duo making waves in the city of seven hills and beyond. They’re the force behind local collective Hayes, whose foot-soldiers include names like fellow Lusitanian Nørbak and Raär among them. The duo have a string of releases on other labels too, Klockworks and Dax J’s Monnom Black no less. Despite this, they keep a relatively low profile, which lends their sound an underground patina reflected in their ability to find and broadcast the rarest electronic gems. These beats and ability to instinctively read a crowd are lightning fast, and so are those raving in front of them. This infectious dancefloor energy comes in a brisk three hour package for Bassiani Podcast 194. Live recorded at NDRX’s Invited by Resident night at the club back on November 17th, this one’s brimming with groovy and fulgurant bangers: breakneck and unremitting techno from start to finish.

Born in Algeria, and raised between France and the Netherlands, with a later stint in London, Mary Lake has lived a life through the lens of different cultures, each adding a little more to her experience in the realm of electronic music. It wasn’t always her medium, but in DJing she’s found her most authentic voice, with her start at more intimate house parties, then on to the best and brightest of Dutch clubs and festivals. For her, creative discovery and expanding the limits of craft is key, covering both the range of utilitarian techno and more atypical sounds, the likes of which she was apt to share via her experimental pandemic-era radio show Worshipping Discordia. Alongside that, and a slew of catchy releases, she’s now a Spielraum resident and frequently billed on stages from Dekmantel to De School to Tresor, Bassiani and beyond. Her percussive techno spreads the kind of wildly infectious crowd energy that drew a younger her towards it many moons ago, now she's on the inside looking out. Bassiani Podcast 209 is an hour of vanguard beats delivered fresh by this burgeoning selector, driving and serpentine basslines to rattle your musical senses.

Amsterdam based DJ MARRØN’s name comes from the enslaved Marrons, who centuries ago, cast off their chains and went to live in the forests of Suriname. Inspired by Afro Deep and a number of great names in the history of Motor City beats, as well as more recent incarnations on the other side of the Atlantic, MARRØN’s sound is aptly liberating and reasserts the foundational link between african rhythms and techno. It’s a hypnotising onslaught of beats with which to lose yourself for a few hours in a sweaty basement. Though it was during the pandemic, under a different format, that his podcast series took off full tilt and gave him the platform to play the former. Nowadays his purist sets have their home at Sunday jaunt Eerste Communie, a community building mission and event series he started with a group of friends, with extra bookings all over the map. Key to his sets is something he describes as ‘constant energy flow’, a kind of forward-pitched rhythmic momentum that keeps him and his attendant crowds going. Simple but powerful and expertly devised, overlapping rhythms delivered in high definition and a mile a minute. Bassiani Podcast 212 is 69 minutes of meticulously crafted textures and seductively layered beats from this decidedly gifted mainstay of the Amsterdam scene.

Born and raised in Germany up to the age of 13 before being uprooted and moved to the UK, Stephanie Sykes credits her Midlands coming of age with having instilled a deep love of electronic music in her. As well as making life-long friends in her northern milieu, it also pushed her to experiment more, and with this her creative passion quickly set her up as one of the UK’s most alluring talents. Fast-forward to today and for over a decade, she’s jumped from venue to venue with a highly developed personal sound that captivates in its 4/4 mastery. This rumbling techno has landed her a residency at Berlin staple Tresor, and gigs at a standard-issue list of big name venues in all four hemispheres. in case that didn’t suffice, she’s also got a growing number of releases to her name on publishers like BPitch, VENT, ://about blank and Tommy Four Seven’s 47 imprint. It’s techno with a simple mission, making people move. But don’t take anyone’s word for it, it’s best felt personally, and on a monster soundsystem if you can find it. Bassiani Podcast 213 is straight up techno, phlegmatically cool and tenacious in its course, an hour of swinging kick-drums and rubbery beats matched and mixed to perfection. A healthy measure of emancipating rhythms, signature Sykes through and through.

The fundamental vision of the mix is a stream that descends from the forest horizon, twisting and turning toward the foreground, filling the spaces with a tactile and fluid sense of motion.
