The Fool (Elation V) is an opera co-written by Colin Self and Raul De Nieves, debuted at Issue Project Room on November 11th, 2014. The Fool, is scored in four-acts for chorus and string-ensemble.

Starring Colin Self as the old woman, Raul De Nieves as the Fool and the Dog, Alexandra Drewchin as the Child, and Mehron Abdollmohammadi as the Mother.

Chorus: Lisa Kori Chung, Stephen Wood, Andy Kuncl, Cheno Pinter, Xena Semjonova, Sarah McSherry, Rogielo Ramos, Michael Bunsen, Daniel Wallace, Mz William Fortini, Ana Lieberman and Lindsey Leonard.

Flora Yin-Wong's interpretation of Santa Eulalia, Ibiza by Nina Blaker 

For both pieces, they were a rather direct and emotive interpretation of the landscape paintings, evoking nature and ‘otherly’ locations as my work often does. 

With Santa Eulalia, the conceptual inspiration stemmed from the namesake, in Greek, Ευλαλια, meaning ‘well-spoken’, which I tried to translate into wordlessness through mellifluous flow and textures.

Whilst for Alpine Landscape, I wanted to evoke a sense of overwhelming calmness, a dramatic yet serene backdrop. I aimed to focus on the presence of water and yet also take into account the presence of humans with the manmade architectural features.

This is my fifteenth consecutive end-of-year mix, and the pleasures of the requisite dredge never wane. It’s a poignant marker for me. Much of what’s here is from this year, regarding my encounter with it. More than anything, the mix describes what’s buoyed me: liveness, interiority, bodies, pining, noise.  

As with every year, please accept this in the spirit it was made: as a gift, and with love.
