There’s been many rumors and stories about the ghosts that grace the Chico State campus. One of the stories that gets told again and again is the ghost of Laxson Auditorium.

There’s many versions of this story. Who is she? Where did she come from? Why is she here?

To find answers to these questions we sent Ernesto Rivera (senior, Journalism) to Laxson Auditorium to speak to Daran Goodsell, Marketing & Publicity Coordinator, and Dan Goodsell, Production Coordinator, for Chico Performances. Dan and Darran have not only heard the stories of the ghost, they’ve had their own encounter with her.

The Camp Fire that broke loose on Nov. 8 and tore through Butte County was the worst in the state's history. Displacing more than 50,000 residents across the county, a majority from the neighboring town of Paradise, the fire did most of its damage in just 16 hours.

But its victims will feel its effects for much longer, and the Chico State campus community is no exception. More than 310 students, faculty, and staff confirmed the loss of their homes to the blaze, which claimed at least 85 lives. Those who survived now face incredible challenges: finding new housing, replacing belongings both practical and precious, and coping with the memories of a narrow, harrowing escape.

#WeAreChico is Chico State's visual storytelling platform, designed to share the voices of our campus community in a space where they can be heard. These seven Camp Fire survivors each opened up to us about their lives since the fire broke out. Here are their accounts, in their own words.

CSU, Chico sociology professor and department chair Nandi Crosby-Jordan joins the show to break down challenges in these discussions, including the problem with colorblindness, the concept of white fragility, and why nobody owes anyone a history lesson on their race.
