PREMIERE: Alex Ranerro - Insistent [Berg Audio]

Crustation were a short-lived trip-hop group with ties to Portishead and Massive Attack; their 1997 single "Flame" was a perfectly nice, totally innocuous, and mostly forgettable contribution to the drowsy downbeat catalog. The journeymen producers Mood II Swing put their characteristically light, funky touch on a club-friendly remix of the song, as they did hundreds of times during their run as New York's most dependable remixers. But Mood II Swing also had a murkier, more abstracted side; you can hear it in productions like "Move Me," "The Slippery Track," and the eerie "Inhale," which sounds like Gary Numan's "Cars" being sucked through a Teflon wormhole. But they outdid themselves on the "Borderline Insanity Dub" of "Flame," lacing a skipping, proto-U.K.-garage beat with hiccupping vocal loops and a lithe, shadowboxing bass line; the icing on the cake comes courtesy of a swirling fog of vocal harmonies that pans from speaker to speaker. Running out of phase with the beat, it lends a sense of tidal ebb-and-flow, throwing the time deliriously out of joint. The fact that Mood II Swing never produced anything else quite like it only makes this fluid, enveloping tune all the more irreplaceable. P.S.

Special times, special release : our six producers are finally reunited in this third output of our Crysta Ampullaris series. Ayuji, Shonen Bat, Slowglide, Nigm, Indigo Persona and Lebird are gracing us with some of their best lockdown creations. As always, these tracks display their mutual roots as much as their individual visions of electronic music.

First, trancethusiast Ayuji takes us on an underwater journey to the lost continent : bright pads turning into epic acid lines as we’re going faster and faster through the ocean’s fauna and flora. Post-fluokid Shonen Bat switches on to ‘Memorigram’, an optimistic solarpunk bass-rolling track that suddenly gets a more contrasted and melancholic mood when the chords appear. Slowglide’s video games hermitage finally paid off, as he invites us with ‘Myst’ to a deep, bass-fueled VR trip through a self-generated jungle full of noises and glitches.

Sound-sculptor Nigm found the perfect balance between deep atmospheres and hard-hitting percussions. Built like a kind of mantra, ‘Toward Brighter Days’ slowly turns into a message of hope for the near future. Goldsmith Indigo Persona blew our minds with ‘Reality’, a DnB-infused IDM gem that showcases his stunning skills for sound design, deep textures and rhythmic twists. Last but not least, crazy scientist Lebird delivers a wistful jungle tune : surgically-precise breakbeats, heavy subs and modern tones melt together in this future-proof piece.

So, while you are waiting for this release to drop dot13 has crafted this intricately detailed re-imagination of Sugar Hill Gang’s seminal ‘Rapper’s Delight’. Featuring samples of the original vocal but warped and pitched in order to bed nicely with the rolling bassline, panning synths, and skipping percussion of this cerebral funk take on one of the most influential hip-hop tracks of all time. Expect this to be filed under 'secret weapon' in some of the scenes top minimal selectors’ USB’s.
