The Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach, or IOLERO, was created to strengthen transparency and trust in the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.  This was in 2015, two years after a Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed 13-year-old Andy Lopez. But Former Director of IOLERO, Jerry Threet, believes the office needs more funding and independence to do its job well. Threet is now collecting signatures to get an initiative on the November Ballot that would strengthen IOLERO. KRCB’s Adia White spoke with him about the details.

KBBF Women's Spaces host, Elaine B. Holtz, interviews Susan Lamont, a core member of the Evelyn Cheatham Effective IOLERO Campaign Committee. Susan talks about signature-gathering for a Sonoma County initiative called the Evelyn Cheatham Effective IOLERO Ordinance, since the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors refused to discuss or implement the suggestions of the outgoing IOLERO Director, Jerry Threet, for more effective oversight of the Sheriff's Office. IOLERO is the Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach set up by the County after many youth-led street protests and a series of public Task Force meetings held over a year and a half for Oversight of the Sheriff were held after 13-year old Andy Lopez was shot and killed by Sheriff Deputy Eric Gelhaus in October 2013. Susan explains why the recently deceased Evelyn Cheatham, a former member of the Community Advisory Counsel to IOLERO, is honored by adding her name to the proposed ordinance. Volunteers and donations are sought by the Committee to support their signature-gathering efforts with a May 11th deadline to appear on the November ballot.

About our Guest: Susan Lamont is a long time social justice advocate who approaches most issues through the lens of human rights. Though her concerns are many, her principal work has been antiwar since the sixties, income inequality, and law enforcement accountability. She was with the Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma County for a dozen years, first as a board member and then as its coordinator. She is a reader, writer, poet, photographer and landscape designer in her spare time.
