Hailing from Perth, Australia, new recruit Luke Sentric joins the SweetBox roster with a jaw-breaking debut effort.

Lead track ‘Gobstopper’ uses minimal elements to maximum effect: ultra-stripped, halftime percussion, a sneering, pitched-up ragga vocal, and cataclysmic globules of low-end. No handshake. No how d’you do? Just a knockout blow from the bass bins.

B-side ‘Laws’ continues the halftime theme, but this time pairs a smoky dub vibe with a funky pattern of grizzled synth stabs. More laidback than the A but still built to impress on the dancefloor, ‘Laws’ completes a perfect package of dynamic club material.

Bristolian Stephen Redmore, known through his drum & bass alias Mako, is finally set to unleash his forthcoming LP on Metalheadz, something which he’s been working on behind the scenes for some time. The label head of Utopia is well known for his slick production and penchant for underground anthems, something which has been seen again and again on his own imprint, as well as across a plethora of labels which have acted as pillars for the drum & bass world. Having already made his presence felt before within the catalogue of Metalheadz, as well as Break’s Symmetry Recordings, Dispatch, Soul:R and Samurai Music, he’s a valuable part of the genre’s make up, which is why the announcement of his forthcoming LP ignited widespread anticipation.

Directly translated to ‘a body of art’, Mako’s LP ‘Oeuvre’ is representative of his life’s work in music production. The switching breaks of ‘Heartstone’, slamming, yet eerily hollowed snares of ‘Offline’ and grinding bassline of ‘Life Cycle’ alongside the late Andy Skopes, a testament to the legacy he left behind, set the tone. Meanwhile, Villem and Fields join Mako for the LP’s next collaboration ‘Liquid Groover’ before the emotive swelling build of ‘The Window’ gives way to a second drop beat switch up, continuing the journey. ‘Flip it’ has already been doing the club rounds, as the moody Photek atmospherics of ‘One Reality’ and more affectional twists of ‘Holding You’ adds to the tracklist’s versatility.

‘The Scenic Values’ underscores Mako’s love of Krust and Doc Scott production grooves, whilst the experimental soundscape of ‘Hoxton Home’ heralds back to old Lemon D. ‘Oh Really’ finishes the album’s more club-orientated offerings, which follows with a 170bpm techno style track via ‘Passive Aggressor’. ‘Oeuvre’ is a walkthrough of Mako’s many personalities as a musician and it finds a welcome home within Metalheadz’s historic discography.

The third instalment of the ‘Misadventures’ series he kicked off on Hospital’s now-defunct Med School offshoot, the EP also marks Lakeway’s first release for Diffrent since 2018’s ‘Storms’/’Borderlines’, and since signing exclusively with Dexta’s label last year.

Picking up where Part 2 left off, Lakeway continues to fuse rowdy club energy with cosmic atmospherics, weaving countless juxtaposing concepts into each track as only he can. 

Opener ‘Moan’ paints halftime drum & bass in grime colours, before tearing itself apart with jackhammer kicks and jittering vocals. Finally, in true Lakeway fashion, the second half switches up completely, being reborn as a rave-fuelled monster. 

‘Imposter Syndrome’ finds a syncopated reggaeton beat battling rapid-fire breaks, synthetic strings and dense vox forming luscious padding to soften the percussive blows.

Finally, ‘Carbon Ghost’ brings back Lakeway’s classic 160bpm grime vibes, all gargantuan claps, erratic synth blasts, and rinsed out MC snippets.

Back home and as on-point as ever, a new era of Lakeway productions begins with ‘The Misadventures Of Lakeway (Part 3)’, out Friday 10th April on digital.

'Teleporter’ is the new joint EP from Deft & Lewis James; a natural pairing of minds for a project that has been long in the making. Both have indirectly crossed paths via separate releases and collabs on Exit Records and 1985 Music, and now come together on Deft’s own B4 Music.

Both artists are well versed in creating a balanced combination of atmospheric soundscapes, heavy sound design and emotively driven electronic music (evident in their last releases for 20/20 LDN / Hooversound and Exit / Astrophonica respectively), which ’Teleporter’ does not fall short on.

With varying tempos and paces, the EP dips into new territories that both have adapted and developed to make their own. Taking influence from their already familiar backgrounds in Bass, Footwork, DnB, Hip Hop / Beats, the result is four ominously threatening, sub heavy dance floor cuts, uncompromising in mood, tone and aggression.

Title track ‘Teleporter’ comes in at 128bpm with echos of the 140 sound, and demonstrates the impact of a single note sub-bass line, drums and a frantic melodic hook; distorted, dirty and fierce.

Carrying through the fraught melodic hook energy is ‘Peepo’; a playfully chaotic half-time/beats stomper, driven with booming 808’s layered with precise and outlandish sound design.

‘Octo’ is the 170bpm roller of the release, a slight breather from the previous tracks that progressively builds tension and apprehension via its infectious percussion loop, haunting & hypnotic melodics and driving sub drones.

‘Wolf 504 b’; dystopian melodics and soundscapes drift and crescendo over slamming drums and a scowling, distorted bassline, bringing this collaborative effort to an enigmatic close.
