I didn't understand it at the time. I fail to achieve any degree of understanding in the ensuing years, which are three in number. I presume Herb means that inherently you cannot be commercial and artistic. You cannot be commercial and quality. You cannot be commercial concurrent with have a preoccupation with the level of storytelling that you want to achieve. And this I have to reject. I don't think calling something commercial tags it with a kind of an odious suggestion that it stinks, that it's something raunchy to be ashamed of. I don't think if you say commercial means to be publicly acceptable, what's wrong with that?
As long as you are not ashamed of anything you write if you're a writer, as long as you're not ashamed of anything you perform if you're an actor, and I'm not ashamed of anything.
This is the area I know. But I think innate in what Herb says is the suggestion made by many people that you can't have public acceptance and still be artistic. And, as I said, I have to reject that.

Bath based prodigy Troy Gunner returns with a stunning three track EP for fledgling London based label The Crescent. Furthering his reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting and innovative young producers, Troy continues his explorations into a completely unique sound. The Headlights EP follows a critically acclaimed 12” for Manchester’s Mindset Records and a stunning remix of Gang Colours’ ‘To Repel Ghosts’ for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint.

The Headlights EP captures a snapshot of a producer confident in his aesthetic, with title track Headlights a glorious representation of Troy’s sound. Plunging basslines and airy atmospheres trail in the wake of a fractured UKG beat, with snatched vocal samples intelligently put together so as to tread the fine line that underpins Troy’s productions, the blurred distinction between euphoria and melancholy.

On the flip Thank You For Nothing emerges forcefully out of a shuffle of field recordings and warped laughter with a weighty 4x4 kick and a slab of sub bass. B2 Elixir has been on constant rotation amongst DJs in the know for a few month now. Subtle yet euphoric and pacy, it’s a perfect example of Troy’s take on club sounds.

The Headlights EP will be released on 12” and digital formats soon, distributed through SRD.
