The inaugural #Songs4Change release features Timi Dakolo's emotionally charged song, "Great Nation." Timi asks us all to come together on behalf of our country, Nigeria. His chorus says it all:

#4 "Chime Asonye presents #Songs4Change" in Nigeria, Africa, & the World!

Nigeria often exist as a paradox. The 2011 general elections was no different. According to the United States Institute of Peace, the elections were the best run since our return to democracy in 1999, "But post-election violence claimed 800 lives over three days in northern Nigeria and displaced 65,000 people, making the elections the most violent in Nigeria's history."

As the elections greet us in little over a month, #Songs4Change will be focused on issues connected to this upcoming national exercise. Given our recent history, one important concern is that this electoral process should not only be free and fair, but peaceful and non-violent. A lot of individuals, especially youth and National Youth Serve Corps members, lost their lives in the last electoral cycle. One's mortality should not be the price of exercising their democratic right.

To help stop this trend, music icon 2Face has teamed up with a prominent youth organization, the Youngstars Development Initiative, to encourage youth to get out to vote and not be used as political tools. As well as to support a peaceful process surrounding the election. The campaign's slogan is, "Vote Not Fight: Election No Be War," please enjoy the song released in honor of the project.

With the voice of an angel, Kaline's "Bring Them Home" reminds us that 276 girls were savagely abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria. Yesterday, January 15th, marked 276 days that the girls have been missing. The exact amount that were originally kidnapped from their hostiles.  According to media reports, 57 escaped but 219 remain in captivity.  As the march to Nigeria's February elections continues unabated, we hope that their safe retrieval will become an important issue focused on by the candidates. We look forward to a day where every girl child in Nigeria and around the world will have equal access to education without fear. There are still rallies to bring awareness to the taken girls, daily in Abuja and weekly in Ibadan, Lagos, and Osogbo. The world may have forgotten, but we never will.

We cannot afford to give up now. Let's #BringBackOurGirls.

#7 "Chime Asonye presents #Songs4Change" in Nigeria, Africa, & the World! 

Nigeria needs change;  that is the message of EME Allstars song released in 2012. Coming on the heels of Nigeria's 2011 elections, the group wanted to harness the energy and momentum of that period and find ways to continue to engage youth in the post-election process. This song does just that --  speaking  to the problems in Nigeria, and inspiring young people to be a part of the change they seek in their country. Also, encouraging civic action and voting saying: 

From no light to bad roads
From armed robbers to Boko Haram
Instead of going higher
We go from frying pan to fire
We must rise and take a stand
What must heal our father land
We need peace and unity
It's up to you and me
We must vote, na the way
Peaceful protest as we pray
Till they do just what we say
Till Naija begins to change

The video for "Change" sets the tone for a much larger and more in-depth documentary called, "Dreams4Naija." The documentary (which was aired on TV Stations across Africa and is available on youtube) features youth leaders, entrepreneurs, and activist discussing the nation, how to hold elected leaders accountable, and solutions and opportunities for the country. I was featured in the documentary and I hope you are inspired by it as much as I am.

#3 "Chime Asonye presents #Songs4Change" in Nigeria, Africa, & the World! 

The end of 2014 not only marks the New Year, but signals the end of an era -- exactly 100 years of Nigeria's physical existence. In 1914, the Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates were combined and what we come to know as "Nigeria" today was born. Though politics and elections have dominated conversation, the 100 years of amalgamation was occasioned by  festivities honoring the period and President Goodluck Jonathan launched the National Dialogue as a result.  

"This Land" is the official Nigerian Centenary Anthem. Commissioned by the Office of Secretary to the Federal Government, the song was written and preformed by Onyeka Onwenu, and features Zaaki Azzay, Tosin Martins, Omawumi Megbele, EBEN, Silver Saddih, Ayobami Ayolala, and Seun Shobo.

Through trials, tribulations and adversity Nigeria has made it this far. What does the next 100 years hold for Nigeria and what should we do with this moment? "This Land" councils:
 
"And as we celebrate
Ourselves we shall re-dedicate
To serve a new Nigeria
For a better land for all."

A new Nigeria is waiting for us. Together, standing in unity, we can craft the next century of our dreams!

"This Land" - Celebrating 100 Years Of Nigeria

By now you may have heard of the death and destruction that has recently greeted Nigeria. If not, the tale is sobering: hundreds if not thousands were massacred in Nigeria’s northeastern town of Baga in early January. According to Amnesty International, 2,000 people lost their lives as Boko Haram, a domestic terrorist group responsible for kidnapping over 200 girls in Chibok last April, attacked the community. Amnesty International described this attack as the “deadliest ever” in Boko Haram’s six-year history; a description that the Nigerian Defense Force confirmed in a statement.
 
While the exact number of deaths are hard to ascertain, the toll of destruction remains clear. Using satellite imagery of Baga and neighboring settlements, Human Rights Watch’s Nigeria researcher Mausi Segun said the pictures “clearly show the large-scale destruction of civilian properties in the area.” These images are direct evidence of what Segun calls a “systematic campaign of arson directed against the civilian population.” 16 towns were destroyed, homes burned down, and many Nigerians continue to be internally displaced and fleeing to other countries due to the insecurity. This escalation in violence is also exacerbated by the recent use of girls, possibly one as young as 10, to carry out suicide attacks in marketplaces in Maiduguri and Potiskum.
 
Boko Haram’s intensification cannot go unnoticed. Orisefemi's song "Religious War" speaks to this, calling on Nigeria to rise up and demanding for government accountability and leadership. Let us pray for Nigeria, as we honor the memory of the victims of Baga and other Boko Haram attacks.

#Songs4Change  is a weekly dose of revolutionary  music to inspire social progress in Nigeria and Africa more broadly. The songs - a mixture of old and new - advocate for positive change and bring awareness to an important issues in our society like malaria, epileptic power, and domestic violence, amongst others. The initiative, called "Chime Asonye presents #Songs4Change,"  will feature primarily African artist but will occasionally include songs from others that promote the theme of societal advancement and political consciousness. The goals are threefold: (1) Increase dialogue on important development concerns with the hashtag #Songs4Change. (2) Provide spiritual fuel to encourage activism towards Nigeria and Africa. (3) Stimulate the creation of progressive music from entertainers and upcoming artist.
