'Tafaa - Random activity of the work of art, escalates an extension of accepted (unproductive) concepts of art, nature and society' is a sound editing project led by Chloé Delarue, a visual artist based in Geneva (ch) in collaboration with Adeena Mey, a curator, art critic, managing editor of the magazine Afterall (Central St Martins, London, UK) and researcher/teacher at Ecal (Lausanne, ch).

Together, they gathered sound artists Jaeho Hwang, Lafidki, Ayankoko, Pisitakun of the Chinabot label and the performer-composer Seth Ayyaz in a desire to bring together horizons of thoughts with a singular tonality in resonance with the TAFAA* cycle. The release is a continuation of the deployment of Chloé Delarue's solo show - TAFAA - THE CENTURY OF THE SNITCH, which took place at the Villa du Parc - Contemporary art center in Annemasse (fr).

The four compositions resulting from this meeting are materialized in a hybrid compilation.
Each of the tracks, affected by the aesthetic spectrum of TAFAA - THE CENTURY OF THE SNITCH, results from unique paths that each sound artist builds in their own works. This compilation released in the exhibition space and in its vinyl form, was infused under this particular atmosphere with the aura of sodium, as an echo of the previous opus TAFAA - ACID RAVE. The title evokes territories in wasteland and multitude of theaters of an urbanity that has become tropical for one night. 

For Chloé Delarue, the environment produced under TAFAA - THE CENTURY OF THE SNITCH and its aesthetic feeling is linked with the dissemination of these four tracks. As she says, it becomes “like the deep trance of a noise invisible to oneself but that we perceive thanks to the questioning of its own imperception, the work no longer looks at itself, it injects itself.”

The vinyl title TAFAA - Random Activity (...) is borrowed from Gustav Metzger taken from an extract from his Manifesto On random activity in material / transforming works of art in July 30, 1964.


Chloé Delarue constitutes what she calls environments under the influence of the TAFAA perception system, an acronym for Toward A Fully Automated Appearance.
TAFAA is a conceptual organ that she builds as a cognitive outgrowth allowing her access to the reasoning that feeds her work. It is under this name, indexed by a number or a subtitle, that each occurrence of her work has been presented since 2015.
Thus, she probes the ambiguous relations that our society maintains with its multitudes of transfigurations, real or simulated, at the time of permanent interconnections and raises questions relating to changes in perceptions and cognitive transformations of our beings under the visible and invisible authority of cosmotechnics.

 Chloé Delarue and Adeena May have already worked together, notably on the group exhibition Neo Geography I & II (Neuchâtel, ch and Seoul, kr) where Adeena Mey was curator with Kyung Roh Banwart and where Chloé Delarue produced the sequence TAFAA - SO O AM (2017), and more recently with the text Retroactive feedback. On Chloé Delarue’s TAFAA was written by Adeena Mey for her first monograph published by Periferia editions in the collection Cahiers d’Artistes - Pro Helvetia.

The vinyl was produced by la Villa du Parc - Contemporary art center (fr) and distributed by Chinabot and Villa du Parc - Contemporary art center.

@diversionprogram traverses the outer sonic realms of industrial environments while rooted in a playful and ever-satisfying rhythmic foundation. Toggling between heavy, trudging bass weight and dramatic granular reimaginations, the mix is a nod to metal, bass and club heads. Phases of textural elegance are peppered among oozing, heavyweight percussion.

Artistic collaborations don't have to be exhaustive, competitive or combative. And for Berlin-based producers James Ginzburg and Ziúr, their work together as myxomy has been almost effortless. Both artists bring with them a deep history of recording in vastly different circumstances: Ginzburg has worked on bass music, folk, experimental techno (as half of Emptyset) and experimental drone, while Ziúr played in a number of bands before settling into her current explorative electronic mode. So when they started working together in 2020, it was their respective backgrounds that provided the touch-paper for an explosive artistic head-to-head.

Ginzburg instigated the process by sending Ziúr beats he'd made in Bristol in a former life, and Ziúr, fresh from finishing her PAN-released third solo album "Antifate", set about sculpting them into completely new forms. In response, Ziúr dispatched vignettes to Ginzburg and he did the same. As they exchanged ideas back and forth and lapsed into absurdity, the songs followed suit, evolving from raw concepts and loops into proper songs as both Ziúr and Ginzburg traded melodies, lyrics and production tricks. The duo's fragmented sketches and scribbles took on new life, channeled, refined and re-invigorated as they developed into anxious, hybridized pop jewels.

Their surprising stylistic choice is revealed immediately on opening track 'Sloppy Attempt', a fractured mood stabilizer that dissociates from Bristolian trip-hop into glossy android pop. Ziúr's singing voice carries the track into a sonic black hole, mutated into an alien gurgle as she gently coos the prophetic words, "a sloppy attempt won't cut it, no no." And as Ginzburg takes the reins on 'A little opaque', singing over Ziúr's twisted neon electronics, it's clear that both artists have pushed each other outside of their comfort zones, providing the reassurance and comfort necessary to evolve.

On 'In and Until', they find an exact median between their two most recent albums. Twanging hurdy-gurdy sounds remind of Ginzburg's 'crystallise, a frozen eye', compelled forward by brittle foley percussion we last heard on "Antifate". A scalding industrial boil of deranged synthesizer squeals and rolling drums parts like the Red Sea on 'Toxin Out', cooling to a crust for Ziúr's half-sung words to echo overhead. "Burn the bridges it's a choice, eat the rich, and throw up on the fuckbois."

"Myxomy" isn't an overtly political album, but driven by a desire to create and a shared philosophical space, Ziúr and Ginzburg are naturally outspoken. Their vision of pop is twisted through history and floated on frustration, growth and constant reinvention. It's a unique mix of polar elements - light and dark, noise and silence, joy and melancholy - that centers itself on one important theme: together, we're far more powerful than we ever could be alone.

Celebrating five years of the experimental music label Chinabot, longtime collaborators and new acts join together for 5, Chinabot’s latest compilation release on cassette and digital.

The 12-track compilation features music from key artists who have defined Chinabot as a label, such as Jaeho Hwang, Sabiwa, Sarah Haras, Ayankoko, JPN Kasai and Pal Hwang Dan. The mix also looks to the future of the label with new artists Nanzhen Yang, Papaphilia, Chooc Ly and more.

Leaning into the label’s experimental tendencies, 5 journeys through fractured club tunes from Papaphilia, the experimental electronic project of queer Sri Lankan-Australian sound and visual artist Fjorn Bastos, hardcore rave from Jaeho Hwang, percussive broken beats and percussive broken beats and cinematic soundscapes from QwentyZ, and Beijing field recordings (described by the artist as “blurred memories”) from Nanzhen Yang. It continues the hyper-eclectic vision which has become synonymous with the label, which seeks to take risks and promote the work of exciting emerging producers. The record features Ondo footwork from JPN Kasai, who recently changed his artist name from Jap Kasai following the racist discrimination against a friend in Europe(“‘Jap’ is a derogatory term for Japanese people,” he says. “I used to dare to use it, but I have changed my mind. I don’t want to encourage discrimination against Japanese people.”) Like the compilation, his track, 早苗 唄 hayanae uta, is about the emergence of the new in this case, growth of rice shoots and the “happiness of harvest.”

Growth and experimentation remain key in the track from new Chinabot artist Papaphilia, who is due to release a full album next year. Inspired in part by the voracious learning of her newborn, ‘no path is forged over the abyss without meeting at the altar’ expresses the “leaps into the unknown that forging radical new meaning requires.”

The new compilation, with artwork by Saphy Vong, pays tribute to London’s experimental music scene, showcasing producers Chooc Ly, Yewen Jin and Nanzhen Yang who have performed at Chinabot’s events in the city over the years.

Fragmented Service is releasing a compilation album for the first time as part of a collective effort. 
The participants all have one thing in common: they started out based in the Seoul scene. 
While they may be based elsewhere now, they are all our dear friends who first met and connected here. 
This album is about how we feel right now at the moment, in our current locations (both physically and conceptually).

CONCEPT

Reimagining "Into the New World" as a Sound of Revolution

In December 2024, Into the New World by K-pop idol group Girls’ Generation emerged as the most powerful protest song among young activists in the movement to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol. As K-pop transformed into an anthem of civic resistance, the streets resonated with the voices of change.

Jaeho Hwang is remixing this song to reflect Korea’s new spirit of the times and cultural shift while reinterpreting it through his own experimental sound. By blending K-pop with avant-garde electronic music, he goes beyond a simple remix to capture the energy of revolution and document this pivotal moment in history through sound. The result is a bold and transformative reimagination of Into the New World.

HYPNAGOGIC SURGE (GEN043) by AMSELYSEN is a dense setup of signal interferences, of jacked up, spliced, reconstructed digital snippets, of outbursts whose amplitude overcooks the microphone's defenseless circuitry. Anxious with unreleased energy build-ups, the music is always pregnant with a double quality, something like a dagger made from ice, the possibility to shatter or crumble into a thousand shards combined with the looming threat of clean rupture posed by the blade's edge. Digital distortion is used here to unmask materials, to frontally attack them and expose their shimmering metallic face; pitch-time processing dilemmas get dodged by exploding into the high frequency gleam embedded but hidden in their algorithms. Completely removed from the "Lo-Fi" paradigm seeking warmth or nostalgia, the present degradation-reconstructions result in newly audible chirp figures, the sparkle of aliasing and the descent into the grainy territory of microscopic sound events. From a more panoramic perspective, these tracks are continually transforming contraptions, with looping frames accelerating, doubling, halting or stuttering, overloading, seemingly struggling to buffer, sometimes mixing with immiscible materials to form a glistening suspension of new sound material.

"Stemming from confusion, indignation, and feeling disoriented, Hypnagogic Surge appeals to dream-like lenses that reinterpret the everyday world; words lose clarity and are reduced to phonemes and their perceived energy, well-known advert jingles and hit songs are obfuscated and develop into undecipherable melodies, feelings ranging from relief to aggression flash quickly into succession without rhyme or reason. In the awareness gaps of the dream state, information is made up and averaged into confusing erroneous approximations — here translated in the poised presence of aural artifacts such as bad mp3 bit rate shimmer, 1/8in inlet pops, bad aliasing and interpolation, unshielded cable radio interference, fake stereo, inverted polarizing, etc
Amselysen’s nightmarish interpretation of the hypnagogic state is heavily informed by tropes surrounding hardcore music, only this time the tropes are removed from their context and reimagined before reappearing into the album, thus resulting in a hyperreality; a simulacra of hardcore, intensity and dynamism. Remediating genres like punk, techno, metal, rap and noise through distant mimicry and radical sampling, Hypnagogic Surge approaches liminal reverie with a garish maximalist attitude."

Amselysen is Montreal-based intermedia artist Hakeem Lapointe’s latest musical project. It focuses on approaching experimental electronics with a critical lens, bridging the gap between conceptual spaces typically reserved to institutional practices and accessible aural aesthetics. Usually described as an outsider artist, never privy to the music academia and alien to most of the underground scene, Lapointe sheds all concerns for musical conventions and pursues their own sonic obsessions, which commonly sit in the leftfield genre. Their current work process ponders on indeterminacy, plunderphonics, hyperrealities, cultural foraging, and hypnagogia.
Works, outside of their own visual practice, include scores and sound design for short films, performances and installations in various exhibitions, including the After Hours at the McCord presented under Kent Monkman - Shame and Prejudice: A Story of Resilience.
