Submission to the Video Game Music Workshop Discord Server's May monthly challenge.

"One of the chief functions of video game music is to serve as a sonic backdrop for a specific area or environment.  This "area" could be a sprawling wilderness biome, an intricate dungeon, a majestic city...whatever the case may be, these areas - more often than not - need music!  Done well, "area music" not only helps to immerse the player in the experience and/or story, but it elevates that experience to a whole new level.  The best area themes become inextricably linked with the areas they represent and form beautiful memories that players share with each other for the rest of their lives.  As game composers, it's our job to take the writer's and designer's work and bring it further to life through sound.

Therefore, this month's challenge is to compose a background track for an area based on given concept art/writing.  Please choose one (or more) of the mock concepts provided, read the premise, take a look at the art, and have fun composing!"

Specifically, I selected Option 3, which was:

"Sci-Fi Action/Exploration (gameplay in the style of Subnautica, Myst, Elite: Dangerous, Mass Effect...)

"In this game, the player takes control of a crew of scientists, explorers, and archaeologists that are investigating a mysterious planet on the fringe of the known galaxy for strange, reality-bending phenomena.  The game is meant to be simultaneously meditative and thrilling, both awe-inspiring and terror-inducing.  For instance, the player might be calmly solving an inscrutable puzzle when all of a sudden a horrifying creature will pop out of the ground and launch the game into pulse-pounding action.  One area of the planet is the eerie, neon-lit "forest" pictured in the concept art below."

Now I remember when I saw your face,
Twas smiling somewhere it should not have been
A body out of time and out of place,
A form that I should not have seen again
‘Cause when I pulled that trigger I would wait
To make sure that the life had left your eyes
I left you drained of all outside that gate,
So that you would not see the sun arise
I know I killed a monster on that day,
Yet it has just come back a different kind
And as I feel it coming toward my way,
Another question’s running through my mind:
If what I’ve left shall follow me yet still,
Then what else may remain I thought I killed?

Sonnet II

I was walking in the woods,
And following a path that went off to the side,
I found a most gorgeous pond
The sun shining on the grass, which stood green
Instead of the floor of fallen, brown leaves
That I was accustomed to
Everything was remarkably still there,
Not a breeze to shift the land
Or stir the surface of the pond
And in that moment I realized I was so thirsty
And so I knelt down to drink from its almost unnaturally clear, clean water
But I tasted a hint of metal,
And noticed a red streak across my hands

Having disturbed the water I saw
Streams of red swirling and swirling,
Rising closer and closer to the surface.
Floating just beneath the water was a body,
Suspended in place, eyes closed, covered in large, deep gashes
Out of which blood poured,
More blood than I would have thought was possible
Something did this to it,
I don’t know what it could have possibly been but it did
And, despite the silence, in that moment I knew
That you’re never alone in these woods
And I ran
I ran away as far as I could,
Blinded by the sun
Back into the trees

Chion:
Breathless air
A remnant of night past
Broken spirits,
The color of broken glass,
With which petals are dusted,
Like rain has taken on a stagnant form
To freeze the world in place,
Still as a dead man’s morn
A crystal sheet across the field
Makes it become a grave
As bounty turns ice
And leaves this soil depraved
Is there a chance in hell still left
With signs so absolute
That I won’t waste away
May this frost not reach my roots

Cade Earick:
Petrified in time
A frame before decay
Stillness broken by the winds
Inside the cold and darkened day
They want to tell of what’s to come
Ashame, it’s silent words they cry
And so they shall bear
Witness to the crack that splits the sky
A sign of winter coming,
Is left within the dust
How can I keep myself
When it seems so simple just
To fall somewhere in nothingness
Where my screams are naught but mute
But I must watch for what’s ahead,
Won’t let this frost come reach my roots
