After just over a year-long hiatus from the Earthly Tapes series – the 3rd Chapter is finally upon us. Offering more mind-altering tracks to the series, we welcome 6 new members to the Earthly Measures familia!

We kick things off with ‘Comets (part I & II)’, the first release by ORSO, the new musical project from Jean Dasso AKA Yeahman, stepping into club and drum music. Alongside faster rhythms, he is influenced by UK Break music, African dances and traditional instruments. In the opening track for Earthly Tapes 03, we’re taken through a two chapter journey led by modular melodic loops, old traditional voices samples, ORSO’s own recordings.

We then take a trip to Argentina as we welcome Balam to the EM family, join him as he takes you on a daydream across the Latin-American rainforest where synthesizers and nature collide to make the perfect mix, guided by a voice from the deep jungle. ‘Ensueño’ is a dance-floor tool for both the start and end of the night.

Japanese native Mamazu brings up the tempo for the third track ‘Tombi’. Transporting us to a hypnotic and hedonistic state as delightful aerophones sound with the exotic chant delivering the feeling of a dry breeze from the unseen frontier. Another dance floor ripper!

The B-side starts with ‘Voces’, a track inspired by the music that Chilean artist DJ Raff’s mum listened to when he was a teenager making beats in his bedroom. He used to take her records and tapes to sample and make boom-bap beats at the time. Every time he showed her a new beat, she had the ability to recognize the track that he sampled. Voces is influenced by both Spanish and Chilean 70’s music, although very deconstructed and hidden.

Ditti takes us through ever-twisting waves as we swim upstream, spot the time and take off... welcome to ‘Poly Party’. The soundtrack to a carnivalesque funked out ballad on a Polynesian beach shifting between slide & ride, cutting synths and dripping flows.

We wrap things up with ‘Small Town Rebellion’, a story told by Scottish producer Kusht – this downtempo chugger reflects the story of a young man in a dead-end town with no future. He needs to break his fate and carve his own path by revolting and manifesting his own destiny.

Earthly Tapes 03

PREMIER: ORSSO aka Yeahman - Comets (part I & II)

Afro-Finnish band Maajo return with their third album, “Water of Life,” a fluid celebration of various influences. Supported by two preceding singles, “Better Days” and “Unelmissani,” the album is the group’s first release with the Brooklyn, NY-based tastemaker label Wonderwheel Recordings. Maajo’s signature Afro-Balearic sound meets late eighties new age and fusion, with touches of modern soul. The addition of two band members, Waina and Gilbert K, as well as featuring artists Issiaka Dembele and Ismaila Sané, has rooted the album’s stories in a diverse range of backgrounds, featuring vocals in no less than six different languages. 

Gilbert K’s drum grooves pay tribute to the late Tony Allen’s legendary heritage and the percussion experiments on a more melodic and atmospheric tip. Cold synth pads and 303 squeaks blend with warm guitars, fretless bass, and Issiaka Dembele’s sublime kora harps and balafon mallets. “Water of Life” shows a band at its maturation point, reaching the cross-cultural coalescence of Finnish-African sound that’s ready for the dancefloor or home-listening. 

The three vocalists take centre-stage on the album: Waina hails from Zambia and sings in Nyanja, English and Finnish; a renowned musician in Zambia for over two decades who now calls Finland home, Waina wrote a song that reached the finals of the 2020 Afrimusic contest. Gilbert K primarily sings in his native Mauritian Creole while comprising part of the percussion line. He made his way to Finland by way of South Africa and China, eventually winning the Voice of Finland show. Gilbert K has played with such legends as Tony Allen, Andy Summers, Diana King, and Suzanne Vega. Ismaila Sané is from the Casamance region of Southern Senegal and sings in Wolof (a widely-spoken language in West Africa) on “Ndekete,” and in Jola (a smaller language in Casamance) on “Èwàn”. 

Maajo is a sonic, linguistic, and cultural melting pot that has come together in Tampere, Finland, like a tropical breeze from the cold north. Their musical explorations lead from equatorial soundscapes to the woods and moods of their native Scandinavia. African influences, electronic beats and organic rhythms, ethereality and the sounds of nature all make up the patchwork sound of Maajo. 

Not only is Maajo’s music a way of travelling to faraway places, the songs themselves have travelled all over the globe. Maajo has evolved from a sample-based electronic music project to a full-sized band, including African vocalists and musicians. The group has put out two full-length albums and three EP’s on Queen Nanny records, in addition to a release on German label Permanent Vacation. Maajo has received the remix treatment from artists such as Luke Vibert and Call Super, and has toured festivals and clubs internationally. The band has built a dedicated international following having been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson (Worldwide FM), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC Radio 6), and Tim Sweeney (Beats In Space), while they’ve been featured by KEXP (Song of the Day), Resident Advisor, Ransom Note, and Pan-African Music. 

“Water of Life” is out on Wonderwheel Recordings October 14th, 2022, both digitally and as an exclusive, limited-run 2xLP.

A mixture of ethereal, trippy, mystic and psychedelic layers with strong grooves and bass lines for the dance-floor. This is a musical journey that takes elements and sounds from Afro-American and Latino-American roots music but with the influence of modern genres and aesthetics such as electronic, funk, rock & more.

The album was recorded during 2022 between Córdoba ( Argentina ) , Mallorca and Barcelona ( Spain) and mixed by the engineer Andres Oddone in Bugambilia studios, Mexico. Finally, it was mastered in Berlin by Sebastian Cordoves. Cirugia al alma is a dynamic journey through colours, different states of mind in a very danceable way.

La Forastería - Que Maravilla La Vida (Instrumental)

Elzy Padme, born in Ukraine and currently living in Georgia, finds inspiration in organic sounds, attempting to capture those that most reflect her life. 
Since the beginning of the war in 2022, she started a long journey that took her across several countries, arriving in Istanbul where she finally flew to Tbilisi.  It was during those months that she decided to record ambient sounds as a travel diary and then submerge them into her music. This Ep holds treasures she collected during her migration.

Elzy Padme - Pattern

Argentinian artist Lagartijeando's ground breaking LP "La Tercera Vision" gets the remix treatment featuring some of the brightest up and coming producers from Latin America and beyond. Wonderwheel family member Gitkin delivers a piece of psych'd out guitar centered dub on "Onda", while label founder Nickodemus takes "La Cumbia de la Muerte" into hip-hop territory with all the Cumbia trimmings riding the beat. Tonga Conga (aka 1/2 of Sotomayor) delivers a killer analog Afrobeat remix of "Sideral Cumbia" with a drumbreak that could have come from Tony Allen, while Joaquin Cornejo goes into deep, ambient house territory with hints of the original Arabic vibe on "Mano de Fatima". More deep & dancefloor remixes from Barzo, Yemanjo, J.Pool and Palka & Melina on deck. A lovely listen front to back. 

Lagartijeando: Raised on rhythms of the Argentinian backwoods, Matias Zundel dips his dance tracks in country folk gold where chacareras, huaynos, and vidalas two step with jungle and electronica. Shaman chantand charango guitar loops are the backbone of Lagartijeando’s signature style. Native voices are the backbeat to percussion and bass tracks with organ melodies combining cumbia and psychedelic noise. Songs give deference to ritual and maintain respect for tradition while pushing the old into a cosmic space future. Step onto the Lagartijeando dance floor – a desert covered in a storm of stars.
