"Columbus must fall" follows an anti-colonial march and grassroots collective in the streets of London, on Indigenous Resistance Day. 

How do we use our voices to protest ? How do we negotiate territory and the public space ? Focusing on chants, music and voices, we can hear a political chorus of intimate narratives defying mainstream history, and the importance of standing together.

Columbus Must Fall

At the end of WWII, around 20,000 women across France were accused of ‘horizontal collaboration’. Their alleged crime: sleeping with German soldiers. And their punishment was having their heads shaved and facing a public beating. Chloe’s grand-mother’s Émilienne was one of the shorn women of French liberation. Like many others at the time, her story was always shrouded in shame and mystery.

From uncomfortable conversations with family members in Brittany to a trawl through the French National Archives, Shorn Women looks at this controversial and overlooked historical event. Confronting official and personal narratives, it's a story about justice, taboo and the power of speech.

‘Fille du pays’ est une création documentaire intime et collective. Chloé y part sur les traces de son histoire familiale, celle de sa défunte grand-mère Émilienne, tondue à la Libération à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Comme dans beaucoup de familles, les récits y sont flous, ambigus, et souvent empreints de honte. On y parle de trahison, de violence et parfois de patriotisme. Au-delà de la rumeur et du non-dit, ‘Fille du pays’ reconstitue des mémoires partielles à travers un séjour en Bretagne, un passage aux Archives et quelques conversations difficiles.

Chloe Turpin (London, UK) works in music, text and radio. She makes audio works at the intersection of sound art and documentary, exploring sociopolitical narratives and affective textures of people and places. Moving freely between fiction, theory and the real, she makes audio essays, podcasts and scripts that question orality, community and the weaving of arts and culture in a social context.  

Onz Loh is Chloe’s electronic music project. She makes songs, sonic worlds and environments using voice, piano, found sound and electronics. Her tracks are lofi soundscapes and fragmented scenarios, improvised collage and emotional residues led by processed-voice experiments and handmade beats.
