Composed, performed, recorded, mixed and produced by Ch'Lu in her home studio, this immersive, expansive & uplifting album is a fusion of binaural field-recordings, hypnotic Sanskrit vocals, classical guitar arpeggiation and underscored electronic soundscapes. 

The Goddess Within uses the ancient Sanskrit texts of the Mandukya Upanishads, which creates the experience and journey of "Aum ( known as “Om”) - the vibration of the universe and all things living. It is the ultimate vibrational healing or Sound Medicine, returning the nervous system to a place of fullest potential, releasing stress, toxins and negativity, free from the control of the mind. (Meaning you can be skeptical and it will still be effective!). Listening to Sanskrit will align every cell of your body with that of the universe, simultaneously healing, grounding and invigorating you. "The Goddess Within" is an album to relax and wind-down to which will also leave you feeling more inspired and consciously aware.

A polyglot polymath, Ch’Lu has been studying Sanskrit for the last thirteen years, alongside her teaching and practice of Vedic meditation, which fuels her drive to expand consciousness through creativity and performance. Indeed the name Ch’Lu itself is derived from Sanskrit, given to Ch’Lu by her Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) mentor; her artistic direction is intuited by the energy of “Ch’Lu”.

Sanskrit is arguably the first language in existence, and also the one most suited to computers; hence NASA have been using the power of Sanskrit to communicate with new forms of life for decades. Indeed this aligns perfectly with Ch’Lu’s creative vision to fuse the ancient with the voice of the Zeitgeist, to transmit the healing and calming vibrations of Sanskrit and other beautiful languages to a wider and contemporary audience in a unique and engaging way. English Translation:

Silence after “A-U-M” is the True Self: The fourth aspect is the
soundless aspect of Om. It is not utterable and is not
comprehended through the senses or by the mind. With the
cessation of all phenomena, even of bliss, this soundless
aspect becomes known. It is a state of nondual (advaita)
reality—one without a second. This fourth state, Turiya, is the
real Self or true Self. One with direct experience of this
expands to Universal Consciousness.

The Silence

“The Sound of Deep Sleep ” is the eleventh verse, which is the experience of the Sound “M” in “Om” (Aum), which is representative of the state of deep sleep (Prajna). There are seven soporifiic cycles of the Sanskrit verse, blended with 3D ASMR & nature recordings between Europe/SE Asia, classical guitar and electro-acoustic sound design.

The Sound of Dreaming

This is the 9th track from Ch'Lu's forthcoming album "The Goddess Within", due out June 9th, for Global Wellness Day. This album was made possible with generous grants from the Arts Council of England, Help Musicians UK and the Oppenheim John Downes Memorial Trust.

This track is the experience of the first sound in the word “Om” – “A” - which represents the conscious waking state. It is also first sound in the Sanskrit alphabet and therefore the first sound in existence.

The Sound “A” is Waking / Gross: Vaishvanara is the 
consciousness experienced during the waking state, and is A, the first letter of Om. That simple sound of A is first and 
permeates all other sounds. One who is aware of this first 
level of reality has fulfillment of all longings and is successful.

This fourth state of Turiya cannot be experienced through the senses or known by comparison, deductive reasoning or inference; it is indescribable, incomprehensible, and unthinkable with the mind. This is Pure Consciousness itself. This is the real Self. It is within the cessation of all phenomena. It is serene, tranquil, filled with bliss, and is one without second. This is the real or true Self that is to be realized.

Turiya

“The Experiencer” features a playful use of binaural recordings of Ch’Lu’s printer and a scribbling pencil on paper, fused with hypnotic Sanskrit vocals, classical guitar improvisation and electronic soundscapes. Mars Mantra (Ninja Mix)

I created this evocative & comforting 3D sonic journey in response to the recent, devastating shooting of my cousins, Shlomi and Shahar (Debbie), taken too soon in the midst of the current hate and violence in our world.  Self-produced in my home studio, the proceeds will go to the three surviving children.

The mother shielded their teenage son who then lay trapped under her body: also a tragic mirror of her grandmother’s fate. In addition to honouring their lives, and the importance music was to them, I wish to spread comfort, and to raise money for their three surviving children*. 

The title of this track also refers to my own personal journey the last months, going from sudden vocal loss to rehabilitation, exploring the simplicity of vowel sounds and returning to my classical guitar roots. 

The image comes from a moment  where the sea breeze created a vibration with the strings of my travel guitar, like the sound of the universe was being played for me. It moved me immensely. The binaural recordings of the waves you hear are from this moment.

Beyond Words

This is the instrumental version of my deeply transporting "Sounds Of Sunrise" track. It features layers of improvised classical guitar and hypnotic vocals, inspired by the sunrise out of my window ( see cover art).

The original version (available on Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Insight Timer) fuses the connecting and focusing Sanskrit mantra Aim Kleem Soh, with classical guitar and vocal harmonies.

The long-awaited and now award-winning music video from UK singer-songwriter and actress Ch'Lu (FKA Camilla Mathias) reflects on the pains and pressures of the 21st century administrative tasks we all face each day. We have all been driven to despair by forgotten passwords, lack of internet connection or when a machine simply doesn’t work. This is the anthem to that admin and technology stress.

Don't has recently won the prestigious Honourable Mention Award as Best Music Video and  Ch'Lu was Finalist for Best Actress, both at the New York International Film Festival. It also won the Best Music Video award at the Sound And Vision International Film & Technology Festival (NYC), was Finalist at the Portland Comedy Film Festival (USA), won Second Prize in the Best Music Video category at the International 12 Month Film Festival (Romania) in addition to nominations for Best Sound Design and Editing; was chosen as Music Video of the Month on Swiss TV Channel La Télé and Best Experimental Film at the Audioshoot International Music Video & Film Festival (Ireland). Don't is also now the theme-tune to TV comedy Batshit as well as being Music Video of the Month for Swiss TV Channel La Télé.

Time That is Mine

This track features on the world's biggest free meditation app Insight-Timer: insig.ht/chlu

This mantra is best used at sunrise or the start of your day. I was inspired by the "sound of the sunlight crossing the Eastern horizon at the time of my birth", fusing the sanskrit words Aim Kleem Soh (108 times ), with classical guitar and vocal harmonies. I chant to this track daily at sunrise (where this photo originates) - it gives me a deep feeling of purpose and connection.

Both bewitching Ninja and entertaining Chanteuse, her signature Fairy Folktronica meets Cosmic Chanson sound is fuelled by her desire to expand consciousness.
 
Of Romanian/British parentage, Ch'Lu, (formerly Camilla Mathias), trained as a Classical Guitarist, Singer and Actress, in addition to a solid foundation as a Vedic Mantra Meditation teacher, various Martial Arts and a growing list of languages. She is a polyglot polymath: creating and performing with a Campfire-meets-Kirtan-meets-Club vibe.

Ch'Lu last year was streamed in several hundred different cities worldwide, has to date performed in twenty-three countries and composed and performed in thirteen languages.  

BBC6 Music DJ Tom Robinson’s Fresh on the Net have already picked four tracks from Ch’Lu’s latest album "The Goddess Within", for the Eclectic Picks and since invited her to be a guest curator. Funded by Arts Council of England and Help Musicians UK, the album is an organica soundscape fusing Sanskrit vocals, classical guitar, binaural field-recordings and an electronic underscore, released June 9th, in honour of Global Wellness Day. Under her Noroc label, Ch'Lu self-recorded and produced the sound medicine album in her home-studio, and celebrated it's launch with a unique night at London's Piano Smithfield.

Ch’Lu’s latest music video releases are "Sister I'll Be There", about connection across time and space, and her painfully honest and relatable song about dating apps: "I'm Not The Type To Sit And Swipe".The latter has just been awarded Second Place at the Lit Laughs International Comedy Film Festival for Best Mobile Film and was also Finalist for Funniest Music Video at the Portland Comedy Film Festival.

Ch’Lu has played gigs in many contrasting venues, from London’s notorious Notting Hill Arts Club and Coronet to the east-end’s Cat & Mutton hosted by BBC6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins supporting Virginia Labuat, and The Dollhouse supporting Revolver; to Stoke Newington’s Old Church and numerous west-end private members clubs (including opening the Hurlingham Club’s Time & Leisure Magazine Food & Culture Awards and debut album launch at The Hospital). She was also a guest twice on Chris Difford (Squeeze)’s Saturday Night Song Club (on Zoom) during the pandemic.

Outside the UK some of her favourite gigs include: Dublin’s Grand Social supporting Madeleine Peyroux, Rockwood Music Hall (NYC), ONO (Bern), Abseits (Zurich) supporting Pablo Nouvelle, FNAC (Lausanne), Culture Rapide (Paris) and Mutuo Centro De Arte (Barcelona). Additionally, Ch’Lu takes virtual global audiences of hundreds on a weekly transformational journey via her “Ch’Lu Campfire' live-streams on the world's largest meditation app - Insight Timer. Other music career highlights include being hosted by BBC6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, recording with film composer Yann McCullough (Spectre:Bond, Grand Hotel Budapest), contributing guitar to Channel Four’s Award-winning Unreported World series, and composing and performing her OFFIE nominated music in the recent London stage adaptation of Lorca’s Blood Wedding directed by George Richmond-Scott (Associate Director on hit musical Everyone’s Talking About Jamie). Ch'Lu's self-produced provocative debut music video Don't won The Honourable Mention Award at the recent New York International Film Awards, aired as Switzerland‘s La Télé channel’s Music Video of the Month, won Funniest Music Video at the Portland Comedy Film Awards in addition to numerous other wins and nominations and is the closing music in TV comedy series Batshit. Ch'Lu's most-downloaded track Time That is Mine (read more here) was awarded the Grand Jury Prize as Best Song at the recent New York International Film Awards and has been chosen as theme-tune for the film The Litter Mermaid. Finally, her Romanian-Language track Sunt Romanca was selected for charity album Mitra Music for Nepal, produced by Annie Hogan (Marc Almond).

Ch'Lu’s work as an actress is currently keeping her in comedy, from the central role in new sitcom Baggage (which she co-created with her sister, Lorelei Mathias) to the forthcoming Funny Women Awards Finalist Creative Writing 2.1 from Melon Comedy. Other work has included US FOX TV crime series Jo, opposite Jean Reno, the darkly comic In The Mix ( directed by Denis Lawson), which premiered at the BFI and The Witches at the Wyndham's West End opposite Ruby Wax. She also had the central role written for her in Marco Ghelardi's award-winning Italian-language production of Di Come Savona Ebbe Il Suo Teatro and starred in the recent Spanish/US action/thriller Escape From Marwin. Ch'Lu's voice takes on many guises, from animation series Emmy & Goo Roo, to Sci-Fi audiobooks Manhattan In Reverse to the latest Puro Earth campaign.

Another passion of Ch'Lu's is painting, so look out for her artwork within her music releases, in addition to some weird and wonderful merch and commissions.  She also features in new German-language non-fiction Zwei Kartoffeln in Laos, by Tanja Weidner and she has a few sets of lyrics published in the London Society Club Poetry Anthology.

So, Ch'Lu is the new Camilla Mathias. Pronounced ChooLOO,  the unique Sanskrit name was conceived by Ch'Lu's Jyotish (The Vedic Study of Timing) mentor, to power and support her creative and performance work moving forward. The transition is in it's early stages, hence you will still find earlier work under Camilla Mathias.
