I was thinking back to being 11 years old, at the first rehearsal for the school play. It was my first year at the school, having recently moved country. It was extremely out of my comfort zone. My hands were in my pockets and I was slouching because I felt so self-conscious. The teacher shouted at me for having my hands in my pockets and for not standing up straight, as if it was the worst offence. It seemed out of the blue to me. Everyone was looking and I felt like the worst person in the world. My heart raced and my skin felt like it was covered in bugs. It was even harder to stand up straight. As children we get taught to never answer back, because it's disrespectful. Sometimes we grow up not knowing how or when to stand up for ourselves.

Pockets

Perhaps it was 2007, I started a moleskine as I have done for centuries, but this time without writing any dates, and mostly consisting of drawings. It was the year I first conceived Dream Society, graduated from art school, became self employed, lived in Battersea in a house with green walls, somewhere in a world beyond time and space; spending hours writing the most extravagant colourful websites using only a text editor, creating experimental films in which I cut out each frame by hand, making music with house hold objects and discovering a world of books that opened my mind and being to infinite possibilities, pondering about the nature of reality, consciousness and existence. My pals and I would go to the supermarket at 2:45am; I wrote songs on an old ships piano I had to tune anew every day, and a harmonium in the key of not-quite-Bb. 

Sometimes I had visions, like lucid daydreams, or frames of future memories: I once saw myself in a flowery dressing gown, writing books, in a flat with green walls in Amsterdam.  Another one had me play on Top of the Pops. Now wouldn’t that be funny, I thought. Sometimes a song would appear like that. Like this melody that appeared, and I had to write it down, and it never became a song, just a small mantra that kept popping up, sometimes, especially at times when becoming aware of my supreme impatience; a wanting of it All, Now! 

Yet when I create, I am patient, there is -only- Now. 

Many years later, in Amsterdam, not yet with green walls but in a colourful flat on my favourite canal, I started playing around with some homemade sounds, a harmonium, some birds, and then pressed record as I sang into the mic and words and melodies flowed freely, and there it was, this melody that time travelled and brought the rest of its song along, because sometimes this is how it goes, and time folds, and everything is different and yet in essence, so very much the same; falling awake from the illusion of time and space and separation, and there is only Now, and Now, and Now, in tune and in sync with the divine perfection of life.
