Heroon was a shrine where the Greeks and Romans worshiped and commemorated a hero. The remains of the hero were laid to rest and offerings were made.
To pay homage to a hero was considered fundamental for the good future of the city.

Áyax is the first hero. Also known as Áyax the Great, son of Telamon, “he will surprise people in the fights of Ares” Heracles said. Forceful, massive, that was Áyax.

Meleagro is the second hero. Son of Eneo, king of Calydon, and Altea, he was a legendary hunter and a powerful warrior. Remembered for slaying the boar sent to him by the goddess Artemisa.

Jasón is the third hero. Son of Eson and Alcimede. When he claimed the throne of Yolcos, king Pelias sent him on a suicidal mission: to travel to Colchis on a quest for the golden fleece.

Ciamites, hero of the Eleusinian Mysteries, is the fourth hero. Those who were initiated in the Mysteries or read the Orphic texts would understand the nature of the hero. His name means “the god of the beans”.
