I remember back in the days where the kicks and the snares made the hits
Stories told in bars, like we're sharing drinks and spliffs,
Before Spotify and YouTube views hit.
Where you'd buy a CD just to hear your fav's new shit.
Back when 50 and Nelly had radio stations lit
‘Hot in Herre,’ ‘In Da Club,’ we were bakin’ with it.
The days raising waves that I always float on slow,
So how did that era affect me as I was growing, bro?

Well for me, I was a kid before the mad flows,
Bumpin' Eminem's albums on my iPod Nano.
I'd get lost in the music while I was at the park,
Sittin' on the swings, I was daydreamin' 'till dark.
Instrumentals hittin' as hard as the truth did,
Whether it was the Eminem Show or the Blueprint.
Every now and then, I'd reminisce with amazement,
As I wonder what's next with this generation?

It's a new style, it's a new day.
Each generation will have their own way,
To earn the gold and silver, all the glory.
To tell their stories like it's Balamory.

I don't understand, but I try to adapt,
To these new trends and new styles of rap.
I feel like an old soul with some new code,

Now it's all TikTok and Spotify streams,
Outlandish lyrics turning to tomorrow's memes.
Easier to connect and meet certain criterias,
Just take a look at what's on your social media.
Scroll through your feed, doesn't matter the site's title
Bet you'll find a new song that's going viral,
Be it lyrics, the beat, a dance, the artist,
The music video, the feature, whatever hits hardest.

Honestly? I don't fully understand it.
So much has changed, some others cannot stand it.
I mean, you got mumble rap, Lofi to look at,
Emo Rap, Jersey club, Jerk Drill, Hoodtrap.
Face tats, Xanny bars and some cups of lean.
Are we not satisfied with gettin' love and green?
And I'm not tryin' to hate on it, I just feel confused,
To all these genres and all these different points of view.

When I started, I admit I spoke with savagery
Like mainstream equaled awful automatically.
Talkin' like the mainstream stuff would never hit;
If it wasn't underground, then I wouldn't give a shit.
In hindsight, maybe envy was hitting deeper,
Maybe that was why I was talkin' bitter and cheaper,
Like 'that isn't REAL rap, that won't be respected!'
But then I learned that 'real rap' is subjective.

You can have opinions, you can keep them for long,
But that DOESN'T mean you're right or you're wrong.
It's just a matter of taste, so you post what you post,
I'll nod my head, even if I don't get it, you know?
If that's the stuff you're into, then rock it proudly,
I'll try and understand these new things around me.
Enjoy these new styles, they're what makes life swell.
As for these new genres? Hell, maybe I'll try 'em myself.
