Bright Flowers

I like grocery shopping. I like being involved in the same activity as everyone else around me, experiencing the same sights and sounds and practicing the same movements. I wonder how different one shopping experience is from another. I wonder if the people around me are happy to be picking out vegetables or if they're just anxious to get it over with. I wonder if I'm spending too much time next to the onions. 
There's this beautiful chord being played between the low hum of the lights by the produce misters and the machinery in the bakery. It's playing an open fifth on an f with a ninth hanging above it somewhere. Really, the ninth is somewhere up there near the ceiling. I don't know what's making it, but it comes in and out as I walk.
I wonder if anyone else hears it. I wonder how different one shopping experience is from another.
The lady next to me probably can't hear anything over how irritated she is with her children. And this guy is just excited to see they're restocking broccoli.

Wrote this one around Earth Day. Thinking about how much I used to be outside and how homesick I feel about it sometimes. It seems like something that would be easy to remedy, but for some reason it isn't. Sometimes I look at my computer and wonder what I'm doing in here.
