First attempt at a song with my guitalele

Gotta move on

I wrote this for my daughter in her late 20's who has a hearing impairment and is often treated like a child by ignorant people.

I was too close to the edge
There were people down below me
Who tried to judge me on my narrow ledge
And they didn't even know me
I thought that they might show me
The way ..
 
As I stood there looking down
They didn't know that I could fly
It was a long way to the ground
And my ambitions were so high
Way way up in the sky..
 
Faced by ignorance not fear
In my world that silence brings
I knew the time was almost here
For me to test my fragile wings
Up where the angel softly sings
 
First the tall man shook my hand
Then the lady gave a smile
I thought that they might understand
So I played along for a while 
They treated me just like a child
 
Then I could hear a muffled voice
But didn't catch a single word
Through my deafness not by choice
As their questions went unheard
 
And my wings began to falter
 
I was too close to the edge
There were people down below me
They saw me falling off my ledge
And now they'll never ever know me
No they'll never ever know me
At all ..

Too Close To The Edge


He was an honest fisher boy, so proud his net to sling
He had no wealth nor fortune but was rich as any King
Soon his sweat and toil at sea would buy his girl a ring          
The fisher girl he loved so much one day would be his Queen.

As he sailed away that morning the sun was yet to rise
With a good wind already blowin' in the late November skies
She forced a smile and blew a kiss then waved her last goodbye
And the cold wind blew and blew.

Next day the chill of a winter storm was biting at his face           
Riding wild white horses as the tide began to race
He closed his eyes and saw her smile a thousand times each day
But the cold wind blew and blew,

Yes he was a humble fisher boy so proud to farm the sea
To chase the shoals of herring fish and trade upon the quay
He had no wealth nor fortune but was rich as any King
For being with his fisher girl to him was everything. 

The storm became a hurricane with the devil in it's head
It blew his boat towards the rocks, a sight that sailors dread
Then crashing on the jagged reef consigned his fate ahead
And the cold wind blew and blew.

He took her locket in his hand, it gave one last remind
Of the fire burning in his heart for the love he'd left behind
As he sunk into the raging swell he kissed it one last time
And the cold wind blew and blew,
the cold wind blew and blew

The Fisher Boy

The wind blew my tears o'er the ocean
And it gave me a notion to sail far away
For a love, sweet, years in its fashion
Was sunk by your passion for heartbreak cafe

You dined on the love of a stranger
My heart to endanger while I was at sea
So tender the food of younger mans glances
With youthful advances and no guarantee

You were all I ever had
But I've no more uses 
For your lame excuses any more

So on the first tide tomorrow
I'll sail with me sorrow away cross the sea
An' hope as the sun lowly rises,

Pirate Lament

It's a very good day for flyin'
Got no wings but I'll keep on tryin'

Flyin' higher than pollution .. is my aim

Up where the pristine air is hidin'

Flying

Don't Need Big Things

At the very end of the pier,
just beyond the lighthouse
Where harsh concrete
turns to liquid dreams.
And the hypnotic rhythm of the swell
when I close my eyes,
carries me willingly, willingly, willingly far away.
Too far, ever to return.
Where life can offer me no concern 
That's where I long to be.

Where the shallow sea flirts endlessly
with mother ocean.
Obeying the tide
and dipping it's juvenile toes, 
before finally taking the plunge .. headlong
into a who- o le new world,
with never a backward glance.

When the tide changes
and the wind rises up, 
bringing a salty spray to my lips
and a tear to my eye
as I try to focus on the distant,
ever shifting horizon, 
on the very edge of reality
along the path feeds my yearning
Past the avenues of learning

Deep within my life's illusion
where sky becomes the sea,
and my heart skips a beat.
That's where I've always longed to be.

Beyond the Lighthouse

I got myself a life again 
Don't need her kinda strife again
For the first time since I can't remember when

Without the echo of her voice telling me what to do

They never saw her taking over my mind
Everybody thought she was the loving kind
But I was young and infatuated

And she toyed with my affection like a puppy with a child

She always had to take control
She fed my heart then starved my soul
Those years of slavery took their toll

Cos finally I woke and broke her spell on me

She needn't be a model or the new Monroe
Just the kind of girl who's kiss will curl my toes
Who will laugh when I mislead her

A girl who'll love me for who I am then I'm sure I'm gonna love again
