Globular Balls

Moody, improvised song with soundscape embedded. Quasi jazz, an all iOS production using Loopy, Multitrack Daw, iFretless Sax and bass, Jam Synth with a Tele, an Apogee Miced vocal track of a lyric written tonight, recorded by the window, on a rainy Vancouver night. With Tele, and Taylor Acoustic Parts recorded into an iPad with an Apogee jam, and Drums recorded into Loopy HD...Tuesday Tracks for iPad Musician...

The Gutterman

A simple mostly improvised New Age style piano centered track. 
Composed and performed using a 49 key budget midi keyboard in Korg's "Gadget" app for iPad.
This will likely be on my next release within a month or so for purchase and streaming on other platforms.

CONTEST ENTRY

This was created for the iPad Musician “free app” challenge.

This was created on a 2018 128 GB standard iPad entirely within the AUM app utilizing many, many apps.  A large portion of them were free.  

The bass is Viking Synth (big bottom preset) run through GyroVibe and into Zero Reverb. 

The arpeggiated part is AudioKit’s “synth one” (BB Arcade Angel ARP preset) run through DLYM (springy flange preset).

There is also a layer of Primer synth (pad adrift preset by spdericemidas)

The Piano is Korgs Ivory dynamic grand run though Eventides “black hole reverb” (dreamscape preset) NOT FREE
However it is also run through Stereo Lag Time which is free to expand the sound a bit. 

Additional apps used are Toneboosters EQ, Korvpressor, BLEASS Sidekick, 4pockets Shimmer, Rozeta suites XOX drum sequencer and Scaler, and Fugue Machine.

All accompaniment other than the piano and simple drum rhythm are generated from a single measure instance of one Fugue Machine single note part.  It is actually only one measure slowed WAY down.  

It is sequencing Viking, Synth One and Primer Synth. 

The Viking bass rhythm is generated by using the Perforator gating effect app by Bram Bos.

It was very much inspired by my newest Spotify and YouTube fascination, Nils Frahm, although it really does not sound like him at all (I wish) If you’re into amazing piano music mixed with electronica in forward thinking ways check him out.

Found a wonderful patch in Synth One by Red Sky Lullaby called Ethereal Modulator Pad. That was the inspiration for the track. I ran it through Nebulizer to give it a little more warble and I knew I wanted to juxtapose it with guitar. I created two acoustic guitar tracks in Garage Band, then added an Alchemy pad a Bass, and some drums via the Smart Drums feature. I came up with two complimentary chord progressions, duplicated the tracks, and then created a build over which I played the Ethereal Modulator Pad for the entire track. I exported the track to AudioShare, trimmed it to under two minutes and put a fade out on the track.

The Adventure

So this is probably one of the more randomly put together tracks I’ve done recently.  It all started by experimenting with patterns and effects in DM1 and playing over the resulting groove separately in Magellan and SampleTank (which is actually useful as an iOS app now that it has ACP).  Some sections were driven by the Magellan jamming and some by the SampleTank jamming.  In the end, I think everything somehow managed to tie together.

iPad apps used: DM1, Magellan, SampleTank, Animoog, Sunrizer, Alchemy and the venerable NanoStudio (were all parts were mixed and either assembled or recorded).

I have been writing, performing (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion/drums) and recording my own music since the early 1980s, just prior to studying Painting at Emily Carr. In 2011, I graduated from the advanced music production program at Nimbus School of Recording Arts, and was invited back as a guest artist to do some final tracking on "A Secret Underground", a body of music and art that I started working on in Japan in 2004. I began releasing fragments of it on Facebook and Soundcloud in 2011, and am in the final stages of an official, fully mastered release. An earlier C.D., "Echo Off a Cloud", is available on iTunes.

I have recently become an avid iOS musician, and believe that the platform has tremendous potential for creating very high quality music in places and environments heretofore unexplored.
