With Lagrimas De San Lorenzo, Chris Coco & George Solar channel their inner star child in order to complete their summer Island phenomena tribute trilogy in style.

Following up on the dub infused “Noche De San Juan” and the rather tropical jazz  smoothie “September On The Island”, this time it’s all about getting lost in cosmic stargazing: the impressive Tears of San Lorenzo occur as an intense Perseid meteor shower night time spectacle all across the Mediterranean each year around mid august - and this is their rather fine soundtrack. A star struck one.

This time around, the crisp beat section touches the more hip active mid tempo regions, with spacey synths & funky organic percussion layers carrying a light yet pretty profound jazz guitar skywards... the latter contributed by Argentinian born & Ibiza based virtuoso Mathias Kamelman aka Kamelmat.

And so it’s time again soon to gather on that island and get together under the moon & the stars in order to celebrate life. All the tears shed on warm summer nights like that are destined to be tears of pure joy. Look up there... or just ask Lorenzo!

A live house DJ set from the Coco Club at the Zap, Brighton from August 1992 recorded onto cassette (there's a picture of the box here for the C90 geeks). All mixing is live and from vinyl of course, that's my excuse for the less than perfect transitions. This was the night that Ten City played live so the selection is very much in the soulful, vocal house area. Nice vibes, I think.

BEFORE SUNSET: This is a live DJ set from Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza, two hours before the sunset, so it's groovy and slowly winding down to the ambient stuff. It was recorded at the end of May this year, and DJed from the original booth in the old part of the Cafe, where the coffee machine used to be. As you can imagine it was an emotional, rather drunken and extremely beautiful evening, featuring new friends, old favourites, and that legendary Mediterranean light. The sunset hour is coming soon.

This is the first in an ongoing series of tracks that got away, music that hasn't been released by a record label and tracks that have only appeared at some point on a compilation somewhere and are not readily available. This tune was made as a special for Glass Coffee, resident DJ at Singita Miracle Beach in Fregene, Italy. It works well for sunsets and general lounging. Portmerion Tide Flow

It's September. I'm at Portmerion. It's the day after Festival No 6, hot, bright, some kind of perfect. I walk in the sun, on the peninsular, alone, and have this feeling that turns into a sort of dream poem that turns into a song. Strings are by Cheiko, we met in Japan at Yasushi's store. She transformed an idea into a beautiful reality.

I wanted to make something to play out in tents in fields that sounded like a dub and felt like love. Something about slow motion dancing in the sunshine, away from the city. It didn't really need words, it's more about the flow than the words. The chords just loop round and round, it could go on forever.

Wow! Melodica Recordings is one. To celebrate this momentous event I have sent some of our favourite releases on the label to some of our favourite artists, on the label and elsewhere, for a retake, a look back, a flash forward, a new version of the original. It's helped to make the creative family feel that I was after at the start of this process to feel real, we're all swapping ideas and tunes now, helping each other to grow and surprising each other with great new sounds.

02 Chris Coco - A Suitcase Full Of Stars (Instrumental)

Introducing Haraket, a 5 piece from South London who are set to release their debut 12" / digital single on Melodica Recordings this Spring. The band emerged from the creative chaos of school and college bands in and around Peckham that have already given the world King Krule. This is the first in a series of releases with Melodica Recordings, with an album due next year. 
 
Haraket fuse wall-of-sound dynamics with often delicate source material, moody electronics, programmed beats and effected vocal lines. Think a post dubstep version of early Underworld or A Certain Ratio reinvented by the new digital century. 'Taint' / 'Attgo' showcases the young band's keen ear for contrast, sensuous tonal material and high drama, something that is reflected ten-fold in their live shows.


Djrum follows on from his accomplished work on 2nd Drop records with a captivating take on 'Taint',  morphing it into something special. It's moody and dark, sounding like the soundtrack of a film Noir with Hardiman's vocals appearing in a new, smoky light.

Night Bus

What is Night Bus?

First, the simple answer - it's an electronic music soundtrack that works rather well on that long, late night journey on the night bus. It's atmospheric, ethereal, ambient, modern music with just enough drive to get you home. It's music to help you stare out of the window and notice the little details that make the ride kind of special. It's music to take you there and help you feel like you are somewhere else.

Then, the more complicated one - Night Bus is a collection of music made by a new generation of London based producers who work around the disadvantages of the current economic climate, resorting to computer programs and MIDI keyboards to create their musical exodus; who have grown up in the metropolis plugged into music on their mobiles, listening to dubstep and hip hop and auto tune pop and the sound of the city itself; who have filtered all this through their software to nurture and create a new sound, a new feeling, a new C21 ambient that, sometimes unconsciously, draws on the spirit of the classic artists  to create a new style. Everyone from Erick Satie to Brian Eno to Tangerine Dream to Burial is hidden in there somewhere. Night Bus is steeped in history but it has a sound that is all its own, and now it's becoming a genre in its own right. 

Night Bus is a compilation put together in collaboration by recording artist Jamie Isaac, film maker Wesley Stokes Mellor and MelodicaRecordings label boss Chris Coco.
