Came across a box of old tapes and lo & behold, found a mix from a community radio thing from back in 1994 (I think)

Round about the time I was playing a lot in Europe for the first time and support DJing WARP tours. It's a tough workout to be sure, and features what I think was an acetate of an old RAC tune called 'Quexos' near the end. A bloody lifetime ago anyway, enjoy - or don't : ]

A potted history of Acid House, featuring some (but by no means all !) of the things which had a big influence on me and were my early road map to House music . Whether pumping out of those 23rd hand tapes from Chicago clubs, or my strobelit, Acid fuelled nights at various dingy warehouses & Occasions in Sheffield, or Graeme Park's impeccable selections at Steamer, Kool Kat and The Hacienda.

Trainspotters will no doubt note some glaring omissions, and a couple of more modern things thrown in (albeit heavily sampling or influenced by this era) . Plus there were alot of weird European electronic records which I later found out made up the component parts of much of what I liked in early House, but time was an issue and it wasn't a sit down history lesson !

Might well do a 'Chapter Two' at some point, for all the ones I missed

I recorded this mix for a radio show a few weeks ago, but also had something like this in mind over the past couple of years. The chance to have this featured on the show in question just gave me the kickstart to get my finger out.... and do it!

A little different from some of my previous offerings..... a deep and extremely melodic journey into some of the electronic music I've been feeling the past couple of years, with some original Italo and breakbeat-y stuff peppering the mix also, with the crank-up really coming in the last third. Recorded on my beloved Condesa Lucia - smooth as butter :)

Had a great time recording this (even if it took me 2 attempts ha) - it's a happy, uplifting, hopeful and at certain moments... melancholic mix.

Melodious Abyss (2020)

Recently, my friend Alexey discovered he had an old mixtape of mine. It turned out to be the very first mixtape I ever released in 1992 as "Curious Josh". I was still in high school and had been DJing for only 1 year. He told me he inherited it from an Orange County promoters collection. Listening to it now... 3 decades later... brings back a lot of beautiful memories for me. I think some of my old school house music lover friends would appreciate this one as well. I looked through my tape collection and found the actual master but it does not play anymore. Which is why I'm so stoked on this find! Thank you Alexey!!! The first half is a nice smooth blend of acid house and techno. Very similar to my Acid Junky tapes. The second half is feel good house. My old friend Derek would have loved this side. The mixing gets pretty rough near the end of the tape but just keep in mind I had only been DJing for a year. I'm actually pretty proud of this mix. Recorded in Newport Beach sometime in 1992.
