My label Fade Records has been a true labor love for the past 2 decades.  What started out as purely an outlet to release my own music in the early 90’s because we simply didn’t know how to contact labels or the process to send demos to anyone, has has become its own living entity.

The label has ebbed and flowed over time with output of releases. We released 4 records in the first 3 years and I wasn’t sure there would be anymore.  But while on my first UK tour in ’97, I came across a record in a shop, bought it and played it every gig.  Soon after I reached out to the label and told them how I was playing it on tour and was getting great reactions every night.  I had the thought to license it to Fade and give it new platform. This would be the catalyst and vision to release music from other artists.  Fade would continue to grow with the discovery of Steve Porter and Sphere. Along with Kolo, this would solidify the first 20 releases.  I was very blessed to build the label on tracks that were each artist’s entry point into the production world scene.  I now have a lot of pride in the fact that so many artists began their journeys in the industry with Fade, only to go onto greater things.

I have seen the label always at the core as another creative outlet for music.  To work with new, young and emerging artists, to be a part of helping them launch and develop their careers has been an honor and truly gratifying.  

Musically, the label has always been an extension of my own musical sound at the time.  I always looked for music that was not cookie cutter or copycat on trend.  I signed tracks that I believed in personally and never signed something for sales.  Signing a track and going through the manufacturing of vinyl process and promotion, I remained 100% behind a release whether it sold 1 or 10,000 copies with the same passion and belief.

The historical roster lineup of the label charts a relevant musical journey through time.

I have revisited my first ever production that launched my production career.  I have been playing it at gigs since early this year with big and humbling reaction.  Happy to share this now and say THANK YOU for the many years of support from long time listeners and to the newer ones too.

The first track of mine to reach commercial release, "...For All The People" circa 1994-ish.  I met my Fade partner Neil Kolo in 1993, even though i had seen him roaming the dancefloor at AAHZ (and surfing local breaks)during the years before, we never met.  Our connection was instant and we started pursuing our passion in bedroom studio.  We had made a handful of tracks before this, but this is the one that caught attention and made more traction then before.  It wasn't until Icey heard me play it out at gig that we knew we had something above the norm.  He encouraged us to press it to vinyl....  

FADE was formed in the summer of 1993 when Neil Kolo, a young studio engineer, introduced himself to Chris Fortier, a young resident DJ at the now infamous "Marz" club in Cocoa Beach, FL, and passed on a tape of some of the material he had been working on. Chris, very enthused by what he had heard, expressed his interest in the idea of working together and learning about how to produce tracks of his own like the ones he had been playing up and down the East Coast of America.

circa 1996 release Fade (Kolo/Fortier) - Heaven to Heaven on Fade Records.  This was our 4th single as Fade and 4th release on the label.  this track, especially the breakdown, was inspired by Sasha gig at The Firestone in 1995.  Remembering standing on the balcony of The Firestone overlooking the dancefloor, late in the his set and we watch the dancefloor what seemed like at the time to pulse.  at one point, I turned to Neil and said how it was like the dancefloor was a heartbeat and Sasha was  controlling the heartbeat with each new record.  We took that visualization into the studio the following week to craft the original, later named for that special moment the "7am Firestone Mix" from which it was born.  See if you can hear the heartbeat?  We would later go back and o make the "Delta Dub" which was played alot by Sasha and John at the time too.  We made this dub in an one all night session starting at 11pm and finishing about 6am the next day.  We had to complete like this because we had just been asked by Guy Ornadel to remix Future Force "What You Want" for DMC and had to start the next day. Back then, we only had an Atari 1040st computer, no hard disc recorders, no studio/mixer recall.  So any project you were on, you had to fully finish before going onto the next production.  We were stoked to get the dub done overnight and I still think it sounds great still today pitched down!

I had a great time playing my first gig for Kompression boys in New Orleans back in July 2016.  Kompression is one of the special gems of underground sounds in America and i am happy to have the privilege to play there and look forward to return in 2017. Chris Fortier releases his highly anticipated debut solo album “As Long as the Moment Exists” via Australia’s finest independent label EQ Recordings. 1.	Hi, Chris!  Thanks for checking in with We Are Machine!  Where and when was this mix recorded?

I recorded this set early in January 2018 at a secret warehouse location.

2.	What specifically made this gig stand out for you?  What made it special?

Any time you can play into the late night and early morning with an embracing crowd, you get those special moments.

3.	What was your approach heading into the gig?  How did you prepare?

My preparation for each gig is the same week in and week out.  I put in a lot of time going through promos and searching for tracks that are interesting and fit into any parts of my extended sets.  I think that’s what takes so much time now – narrowing down your music to have cohesive and strong choices.  Once I’m at the gig and about to start, I find that first track to transition from the DJ before (if there is one) and go with it and let the music and crowd lead me somewhere.

4.	What are some of your key tracks in this mix?

This is an early part of my set with the first 2 hours showcasing deep vibes and building on top with each record.  There are a few of my own productions in this mix including my remix (as Cool Gold with Stephen Wilson) of Phoenix “Rise Up” out now on the Tactal Hots label.  Also included, is an original track (“Lost Letters”), which is in collaboration with Andromo and soon out on Culprit. And, there are other remixes of mine in there too – Slumber “Temple” (Chris Fortier Fully Executed Remix) forthcoming on Motek, and one for Prophetts on my own Fade Records.

5.	Looking ahead, what are some key dates coming up on your schedule and what projects are you lining up for 2018?

I’m looking forward to spending 2018 playing only the shows I really want to play and to cut down on gigs that are less memorable.   I would rather play less, but more meaningful gigs, than just filling my calendar up.

There are few individuals within the underground dance music industry able to match Chris Fortier for both influence and achievement over the last two decades. With a mandate predicated upon the deceptively simple notion of "constant musical evolution", the founder and owner of the globally renowned Fade Records, is not constrained by boundaries, reflected in both the music he plays and creates.

An extensive list of achievements is testament to such elevated ideals, perhaps best showcased by the iconic 2005 "Balance 007" compilation; a groundbreaking CD at the vanguard of a fresh, innovative and underground sound movement, that history would later record as an aural blueprint for the worldwide dance music explosion that followed in the subsequent decade and beyond. A further eight commercially released mix albums would also contain the Chris Fortier DNA.

As a production artist, Fortier's portfolio of skills have been crafted and honed through an intimate 20-year knowledge of clubs across the globe's dance-floor capitals – from Tokyo, Melbourne, Mexico City to Budapest and Buenos Aires to residencies at the legendary AAHZ in Orlando in the early 90’s through to New York's Twilo and London's The Cross. Always in demand and prolific in output, a continually rising 400 plus Beatport production credits tell only half of an impressive story. Fortier's remix of Delerium's "Silence", was the first and original remix and sold in excess of one million copies worldwide; while work for John Digweed's Bedrock imprint further cemented an ever-growing reputation alongside the full-length album, "As Long As The Moment Exists" and its follow-up remix album on behemoth Australian imprint, EQ.

Never one to rest on his proverbial laurels, Chris' productions have seen him take on the mantle of highly regarded modern producer with releases spanning the underground sound including most recently on Bedrock, Selador, Balance, Mooseeka, Tulipa, Maya, Manual, Ground Factory, Maktub, Mindwarp and his own imprint Fade. His remixes and collaborations since 2009 tell their own tale, as Chris remains as integral, relevant and at the leading edge in the Underground as ever. With an innate and immaculate sense of what makes the industry tick, built upon longstanding personal experience, Fortier's musical evolution shows no sign of extinction.
