Early morning at a turkey roost in a large cottonwood, near the mouth of Aravaipa Canyon, Arizona.  Several of the turkeys have already left the roost, this recording includes the descent of most of the rest, along with other birds singing their dawn songs.  Recorded on May 2, 2021.

A lovely pre-dawn chorus in southwestern New Mexico, near the Gila and Aldo Leopold Wildernesses.  Features American Robin, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Mexican Spotted Owl, Common Nighthawk, Hermit Thrush, Mexican Whippoorwill, and listen close for the barking of the Elegant Trogon.  Much of this area was burned in a wildfire in 2022.

A lone wolf calls near a canyon rim in eastern Arizona on June 18, 2014.  Mexican wolves were reintroduced here in 1998, and have struggled to hang on in the face of poaching and over-management.

A bald eagle swoops in to land, calls, takes off, circles and returns, calls some more then takes off.  Use headphones for best experience.  Recorded May 31, 2024 at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.  Also in the recording: Red-breasted Nuthatch, Northern Flicker, Dark-eyed Junco, Mountain Chickadee, American Robin, Hammond's Flycatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Tree Swallow, Warbling Vireo, and distant waterfowl.

Start of the dawn chorus at Upper Lake, Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.  Trumpeter Swans mutter while accompanied by Wilson's Snipe, Pied-Billed Grebe, American Robin, Gray Catbird, Tree Swallow and others.  Coyotes join the chorus at the end.

A lovely variety of birds (plus red squirrels) greet the morning with song and drumming.  Singers include American Robin, White-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, Common Raven, Hermit Thrush, Audubon's Warbler and others.  Drummer was a Three-toed Woodpecker. Just a pleasant dawn chorus from the Mono Hills, near Lee Vining, California.  Recorded on June 6, 2025.  Features Green-tailed Towhee, American Robin, Mountain Chickadee, Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker, Williamson's Sapsucker, Western Tanager, Dusky Flycatcher, Dark-eyed Junco and Douglas' Squirrel.

Fall bird activity at a waterhole near Mono Lake, at 9208 feet in elevation (2806 m).  Breeding activity is over, migration is in progress, and there was a lot of activity at the waterhole.  Sounds include American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, Pileated Woodpecker, Douglas' Squirrel, Cedar Waxwing, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, and Red Crossbill.

Late summer evening on the Carson River, near Carson City, Nevada.  Canada geese and ducks flyover, beaver play in the water, and a variety of insects call.  Recorded on September 9, 2015, using dual EM-172 capsules in a parabolic dish into a Sony PCM-M10.

Greater and lesser sandhill cranes fly over the mics near Bosque del Apache in central New Mexico, on their way from their night roosts to their feeding areas.  Recorded on December 8, 2015.  The recording is an excerpt of the flyover of thousands of cranes that lasted more than an hour.

Snow geese winter by the tens of thousands at Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge in central New Mexico.  This is a compilation of take-off and overflight sounds.  Recorded December 8-9, 2015.

Dawn chorus in the White Pine Range of eastern Nevada, south of Eureka.  Recorded on June 30, 2016, using a modified SASS array and Primo EM-172 capsules.  Singers include Clark's nutcracker, spotted towhee, robin, and possibly song sparrow.

On a hike on a cloudy, windy day in Great Basin National Park, I ran into a mixed flock of Mountain Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches.  Listen with headphones to pick up the subtleties of the wind as it roars through the pines and tickles the aspens.  Recorded on October 1, 2017.

Morning in Copper Basin

A small stream flows though a lush mountain meadow of grass, willows and alder in the late afternoon.  A beaver pulls itself out of the water, chews off a willow branch, and quietly re-enters the water.  The stream flows on.  Recorded at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge on July 7, 2017.

A breezy morning near Escudilla Peak in eastern Arizona.  Western Wood Pewees, Western Bluebirds, Chipping Sparrows greet the dawn.  Recorded near 8,000 feet on June 12, 2017.  Use headphones for best experience.

Spring in the mountains

A quiet evening in a remote mountain range south of Battle Mountain, NV.  The campground had burned out last summer, but there were still a few scraggly cottonwoods and the willows were trying to return.  Not to much in the way of bird life, but the crickets seemed to be doing ok.  Recorded in the Shoshone Mountains, Nevada, on August 6, 2018.

I left the recorder out near a spring in the Cascades, SW of Sisters, Oregon.  These sounds were recorded about an hour after dark, on a cloudy, damp evening.  It started to rain about an hour later.  I'm pretty sure the sounds are at least two black bears - probably a mother and cubs.  Recorded on September 22, 2018.

I was recording this frog (Sierran chorus frog) when a Great Blue Heron took off and flew overhead.  Recorded on September 25, 2018 in the Cascades of southern Oregon.  The humming sound is distant cowbells.

A warm summer night along the Carson River in northern Nevada.  Cottonwoods whisper in the breeze as crickets and cicada stridulate and poorwills and distant screech owls and coyotes call.  A beaver climbs out of the stream, stumbles through the leaf litter and begins chewing on a log.  Use headphones to pick up the subtleties of this relaxing track.
