Medellín's greatest techno export, Andrés Gil is no stranger to underground territories, having released numerous releases at some of the finest techno labels.

Being synonym to straight-to-the-point techno, he never fails to impress with his productions and of course he wouldn't do an exception at his return EP on Barcelona's powerhouse Devotion Records.

EP starts off with the title track, a cutting-edge peak time tool with heavy bassline and nasty acid elements. ''Dead Habit'' is an ambient production to give you a moment of peace between the techno storms and continues with the ''1459'' which is another peak-time killer. Last but not least, Devotion Records' usual (and talented) suspect Avox25 takes care of the remix duties with a rework on the title-track showcasing his beloved and powerful signature sound.

This week´s #AMFM is one hour of my most challenging gig in 2019. Click to listen, read on, if you wanna know why. 

May 1st 2019, so almost exactly a year ago, I was booked at a small Open Air called In Hannover, which took place at the location Tante Hanne and which was organized by my friend Schreckie, who has been the main promoter in Hannover for more then 20 years now. I played Mayday festival the night before, or shall I rather say the morning, as I did the closing at 8 in the morning. After a short sleep in the hotel, me and my tour manager Simon took a train from Dortmund to Hannover in the afternoon, as my set time was 7pm - 10pm, closing the party. I didn’t have much for breakfast, so I started to get hungry in the train. As there was no food on board, I remembered that I had a chocolate bar still in my bag from weeks before, I will not mention here where I got it ;) (Thanks Damian). So I figured that I might as well eat the chocolate bar, some sugar will help to get some energy back. I remember I was watching something on my iPad, when I started noticing a weird feeling and that those people on my screen started to look like 3D. I had been smoking a little weed earlier on, so I thought to myself, well that has a weird effect on me. My situation didn’t get much better and after a while I told Simon, who was sitting a row in front of me, that I was feeling weird. When he looked at me, he just shouted out, what did you do, you look totally all over the place. I tried to concentrate and picked the chocolate wrap out of the trash and looked at it. It said Venice on there, not much else, and then it dawned on me, that this was mushroom chocolate. Now I have to reveal that up to this point, I have never ever in my life taken mushrooms nor LSD of any kind. To make a long story short, I crawled out of the train when we arrived and I was in mushroom wonderland. Weirdly funny and scary at the same time. My biggest concern was not being able to play the gig, as I could hardly coordinate my hand movements. That stressed me out a little, but everyone around me took super care and calmed me down a lot (thanks again Simon). Not sure how, but I somehow managed to start playing with a 30 min delay, after barely making it on the stage. I remember looking at my mixer and it looked like a little Lego toy. In front of me a big crowd of people in the setting sunshine, totally up for party and me trying not to fall over and trying to figure out which button to turn and fader to push. I guess only due to my routine and knowing my setup inside out, I was able to pull that gig off. Just a day later I learned that I took a double dose and many are still wondering how I managed to even walk, not to mention play (tap on my own shoulder for being so disciplined). This is one hour of those 2,5h that I ended up playing, so don’t expect manic mixing, maybe don’t even expect much. But I thought I share this experience with you during these times, so you have a laugh and can hear how I play when I am high as a kite. Maybe not much different to other times really, or? Set Report AMFM 288

This week´s AMFM is the fourth hour of a 6h set that I played at Concrete, Paris on September 23rd 2016. The Concrete Club was on a Boat (barge) on the river Seine in the middle of beautiful Paris. The crew behind Concrete is one of the most wonderful bunch of promoters I have ever met and it showed in what they had created with this club. I always loved to play long sets there, I think my longest one was 10h (I think I might even released that set as another AMFM show). And I also always loved to open up the night, as I did in this case, hence the beginning of the set. In the background you can hear the people entering the club, directly aiming for the dance floor and ready for whatever there is to come. Talking about the audience, those at Concrete were some of the most open minded and ready to party people I have encountered in my career. Sometimes a DJ would be playing Drum and Bass before you, sometimes House… anything good and the crowd had a good time, I loved that atmosphere. Also it always was very intimate, with a no picture policy, you as a DJ were basically standing right in front, smiling, dancing and laughing along with this amazingly diverse crowd. And all that essentially in the middle of Paris. I really miss this place and put it up there with cult clubs that have sadly closed their doors forever, like Output, Omen and so on. Concrete closed its doors for good end of July 2019 due to issues with the owner of the barge. It will be forever missed, but the crew behind Concrete is still busy and I am sure one day we will have a new amazing place created by them for us to party at. Until then, we have those memories… and recordings. Enjoy.

Another legendary club that closed down too soon in 2015, Vessel was a beautifully designed club in the middle of San Francisco, with a top notch sound system. I always loved to play there, especially open to close sets. This one here is 5 hours long and from February 2015. Today´s show features the third hour of the set. The interesting thing with Vessel was, that it was not a “pure” techno club, actually just a few techno nights were on in this place and I guess, I was always among the most “underground” DJs to play there. I love those kind of challenges, to get a crowd going that is not only there to hear you, but also filled with people who might have never heard this kind of music before, let alone knew who I was. This is why this set is for some of you maybe all over the place and a little more tamed down, but as far as I remember, that night was quite a belter :)  People were always up for a good party in there, no matter what the musical direction. Chris Liebing is synonymous with techno. His legacy is long assured, but his craft never stops evolving. Whether as label head, podcast curator, DJ or producer, he continues to challenge himself and his audience to explore new realms in the electronic world. And often ahead of the curve, too, from the early, hard-edged and loopy 90s sound which is back en vogue today, through his more stripped-back turn of the millennium minimalism and onto the cinematic atmospheres and broader alternative electronica of his latest albums on Mute. It's no stretch to say, then, that Chris Liebing's story is closely connected to the story of techno itself. 

Liebing is considered a global techno ambassador, but his ambitious album projects and direct club tracks excite and innovate as much as any new school star. A proudly forward-thinking attitude ensures that is the case as his DJ tools and studio setup constantly evolve. He continues to be an early adopter of emerging technology, too, just as he was with vinyl controllers, Traktor and when leading the way with full hybrid/live DJing. 

These days, Liebing incorporates an ever wider sphere of sound into his own work. After an eight-year break from full lengths, 2018's Burn Slow on Mute was a creative rebirth that received critical acclaim and confounded all expectations. It was a melancholic mediation on gothic moods, looming apocalyptic landscapes and optimistic broken-beat techno that drew from his childhood love of Depeche Mode, Gary Numan and the New Romantic movement. 

Remixes for Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp followed alongside a collaborative single with Charlotte De Witte, and 2021 brought a second album on Mute, Another Day. It found Liebing exploring all new ways of expressing both his euphoric and melodic side, all with high-grade technical skill and meticulous sonic craft with a range of collaborators from Miles Cooper Seaton to Polly Scattergood. This exceptional form continued into 2023 as he returned to the club with his Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP on CLR, a passionate and politically charged call to the dance floor that joined Liebing and Luke Slater’s remix of Depeche Mode’s iconic ‘Ghosts Again’ in the first half of the year. 

Born in Giessen and active ever since the 1990s, Liebing has always platformed the talent around him as much as himself: a long time before they were commonplace, he famously helmed his own CLR podcast. For many years, it was the scene's most influential series, with a who's who of international pioneers at the helm. After that came the equally important AM/FM radio show, but now following a hiatus, the CLR podcast is back and pushing a fresh techno agenda, as is his iconic label of the same name.

In its first chapter, CLR stood for Chris Liebing Records, then Create Learn Realize, and now Create Learn Repeat - a subtle evolution that is at the heart of everything Liebing does. The label will always be synonymous with exciting techno and is now back hosting parties and festival stages. 

Though his music is underpinned by pulsating menace and a stomping sense of drama, Liebing himself is friendly with a famous smile. It is the music that motivates him and the freedom that comes with increased experience. These days there are no limits, no expectations, but a continued love for the art and craft of techno that is taking him down all new creative pathways.
