It’s not often that a breakthrough producer manages to cause major hype after just one release but when that artist is from the UK, putting out a brilliant EP on Moodymann’s Mahogani Music, you start to realize how it happened in Dan Shake’s case. Now it’s time for Dan to build on this incredible start and from the way things are looking it’s safe to say it’s all going in the right direction. Another rising star from the UK is Wolf Music regular Medlar who has been making serious waves the last 5 years. Remixes for the likes of Glenn Astro and Disclosure have all helped put him in the spotlight and his debut LP Sleep from 2013 delivered in spades. So when the news that these two were joining forces for a collaborative project reached us here at D.O.G we wanted in on the action.
The lead track entitled Walk has all the hallmarks of a long-lost Detroit house classic but with a UK touch that adds just the right amount of polish to the dusty MPC beats and phasing rhodes chord. Soulphiction adds a slightly deeper edge on his remix but keeps the vocals in place and pushes the beats in an altogether housier direction. Finally we have I On You completing the EP in fine style with a more soul-tinged track but keeping the groove and bassline positively roughed up ensuring things stay raw and underground.

Dan Shake is probably best known more recently for being the first non-Detroit native to release on Moodyman’s legendary Maohgani Music label - and that was with this debut release, ever! Having built his name across the UK and overseas with regular shows at London’s Corsica Studios Sessions, Dimensions Festival and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide to name but a few, Dan dropped his debut release via Mahogani music in early 2014, following up with a sold-out release on Bristol based Black Acre this year. Now the respected selector teams up with Wolf Music regular Medlar and joins the Delusions Of Grandeur family (home to the likes of Session Victim, 6th Borough Project and Toby Tobias) with the funk fuelled Walk EP.

Premiere: Dan Shake & Medlar - Walk

We first introduced these strapping young house aficionados from Sligo, Ireland, with their debut EP as a pair, “Street Urchin”, a little over a year ago. Since then the guys have been busy with a massive release on Detroit Swindle’s label Heist, not to mention their unbridled musical passion lead them to launch their own label Splendor & Squalor beginning of this year, kicking things off with a sell out vinyl only pressing of another four track EP of their own imaginings featuring a hot remix from Session Victim. 

We’re pleased to share with you their latest creation, the stunning “Lamaj’s Secret EP”. Now, we’re not sure who Lamaj is exactly, but the mystery, funk and raw sex appeal in these four jams certainly has us wondering. 

First up we meet “Lamaj”, this track drips with delicate melodic samples, jazz tainted drums and bass driven funk galore. We asked our long time friend, Australian Andy Hart, to give it a flip for us on A2. He opened things up, deepened the vibe and brought some bass toms to deliver a final punch. The B-side begins with “Four Lights”, here the guys slow things down a little and remind us of their gift for nostalgia touched soul and groove samples. Finally, “Garlic Fist Pump”, as the name suggests, takes us straight back out to the dance floor, between the dynamic live drums, subtle vocal snips cry to the hip hop Brame & Hamo draw so much inspiration from. Welcome to the House of Lamaj, we hope you’ll take off your coat and stay a while.
