I've only gone and recorded a cover track!

This is a cover of George Benson's "Give Me The Night", which I created from the ground up using a mixture of VSTs including Spitfire Audio's LABS (for the hi-hats and strings) and MDA's ePiano.
There are also some subtle appearances of samples from the classic Roland MC-303 (the brass!) and the woodblock and snare are from the old Yamaha XG soundset!

What makes this special is that this is the first time I've laid down my own vocals for over 15 years!

True, there may be a little pitch correction to tighten it up, but it was great fun recording and arranging the backing vocals.

Just an experimental 3D soundscape created using DearVR and Dopplar Dome plugins of a rider's POV on a Sizzler-Twist ride.

Instrumental track with an urban flavour originally composed to accompany a rap by my old alter-ego DJ OSKA in 2004.
The track is named so because the original rap was based on my experience spending the night on the streets of Waterloo, London at the ripe age of 17 with my girlfriend at the time whose family didn't allow me to stay in the comfort of their home.

I later performed this track in November 2004 in front of a large audience at the UEA venue in Norwich as part of the Eastern Daily Press "Next Big Thing" competition. I made it to the final 8 contestants.

On-board recording of the engine sounds of the British Railways prototype High-Speed Train power car number 41001.
The engine is a turbocharged Paxman Valenta diesel engine which has been overhauled recently as part of the locomotive's restoration.
The high-revving engine and turbocharger "scream" are characteristic of this particular type of engine and were commonplace in the British Railways Intercity 125 trains that were introduced throughout the country during the 1970s.

Preview of my "Rolling Thunder" nature recording.

"Ideal for relaxation, this clean, stereo nature recording beautifully captures the tranquillity of a typical British summer thunderstorm from the moment the birds stop singing as the first spots of rain roll in, to their re-emergence as the storm passes".

I have always loved the sound of thunderstorms and used to try and capture them on camcorder as a teenager.
After hearing several "thunderstorm" sound effect CDs, I had always wanted to capture my own recording that ended up far more realistic and genuine than those I had already heard.

Unlike those recordings, this one does not feature any repetitive sounds sourced from third parties, nor does any part of the recording loop. Apart from some editing and a few multi-tracks, this recording is 100% genuine and recorded by myself.

PREVIEW: Rolling Thunder

An audio preview of my "Domestic Glass Harp" sound library, which features a collection of tuned recordings that can be used to create music when loaded into a sampler or digital audio workstation (DAW) software.

The concept behind this sound library was born purely out of my own curiosity after experimenting with wine glasses and discovering the professional glass harp instrument, which builds on this sound-making principle.

Recording of a medley arranged by Tom Meijer played on a 68-key street organ built by the late Arthur Bursens of Antwerp in 1978. Apparently this was one of the last organs he built. It is currently owned by George "Teddie" Cushing whose father founded the famous Thursford Collection in Norfolk, UK.

Recorded from the ringing chamber, the bells of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich ring out prior to Evensong on Sunday 25th of November.

As a bellringer myself, I was invited to join in with the ringing by conductor Faith Pearce and was allocated the number 4 bell. Considering this is only the second time I have rung in a ring of 12 bells, I think I did rather well!

Since the recording of the material for the first library, I have taken more recordings at over THIRTY more towers. No two church towers sound exactly the same- the bells all have their unique tonal subtleties which add to the sonic distinction of a particular church.
I guess this library could be seen as an audio documentary of the sounds of Norfolk's churches.

A nice mixture of both exterior and belfry recordings appear and the library features a variety of different English-style change ringing techniques as well as clock chimes and a 5-bell chime played manually by Ellacombe apparatus.

Binaural Haircut [ASMR]

Recorded from the belfry during a rare and pre-arranged visit, the five bells of Norwich Cathedral strike noon.

The unique "Norwich Quarters" was composed in 1876 by Revd. E S Medley as the result of a competition.

A binaural recording taken on a soon-to-be-withdrawn British Railways Class 156 DMU in North Norfolk.

These trains have been in service since the late 1980s, but are now facing withdrawal as local train operator, Abellio Greater Anglia are investing in an entirely new fleet of trains to replace them.

The Class 156 is powered by one 14-litre Cummins NT855R5 turbocharged diesel engine per carriage and this drives a two-stage Voith T211r hydraulic transmission, which results in the unit's engine speed remaining pretty much constant from departure up until speeds of around 43mph, where the torque converter locks up and creates a direct drive from the engine to the transmission, giving a maximum speed of 75mph.

I love the distinct characteristics of these "Sprinter" trains- the Cummins engine generates a nice thrum through the floor and I will certainly miss their nostalgic charm when they finally go.

Inside the lofty tower of Langham Church are three bells.
Originally hung for full-circle ringing, the bells currently chime the quarter-hours by hammers linked up to the clock below.
Whilst the bells are currently in no fit state to ring "full circle", we were given permission to swing-chime the bells for the purpose of this recording.
I think they sound rather sweet.

Practice nights at Grimston are ...different!

The band (myself included!) start ringing in rounds (123456) before the tower captain shouts "Go Westminster Chimes".
Bells 4 and 5 "stand" whilst the rest of the band have to ring out the well known "Westminster Quarters" by keeping their bell under control.
There were several attempts at this bell handling exercise and this was the best attempt!

Originally intended to strike the well-known "Westminster Quarters" (or "Cambridge Quarters" if you want to be really pedantic of the origin of the well known tune denoting the time), the church clock at the market town of Swaffham, Norfolk has been wired up to the chime hammers in such a way that the resulting melody is quite different.

Few people will understand just how much of a personal achievement it was to finally bag this recording.
Situated on the busy A148 road between the towns of Holt and Fakenham in the sleepy village of Letheringsett is a former brewery maltings perched on the bank the River Glaven with it's own three-bell clock chime, which dates from 1937. The bells were cast by Gillett & Johnson and tuned to the notes A, F# and D.
During the day, it is near impossible to park anywhere close, let alone get a clean recording of it.
However, after years of passing it, the opportunity arose one time in the dead of night, when I happened to be passing a few minutes before it struck the hour.
I parked the car a short distance away and walked to the clock on foot. Conditions were ideal- no wind, no traffic. Perfect!

A celebration of British Rail traction past and present, "Thrash!" is an extensive collection of recordings capturing the variety of sounds from a selection of diesel, electric and even steam-hauled trains at a variety of locations across East Anglia over the last 5 years.
