“Firewood in the Rain” was born on a day when I was out chopping wood in the middle of a downpour. The image stuck with me—it felt like the perfect metaphor for carrying pain, persistence, and heartbreak. That’s when I wrote the line: “I could fill a wheelbarrow with this pain.” From there, the song grew.

I wanted the instrumentation to reflect the atmosphere—like rain on a tin roof—so I added dulcimer alongside harmonica to give it depth and texture. The mix of folk, country, blues, and soul grounds it in something raw and human.

At its heart, it’s a ballad about the clash between rural roots and urban dreams, about giving everything you have and finding it’s still not enough.

Kentucky-born artist Chris Stapleton is an 8x Grammy, 15x CMA and 15x ACM Award-winner and one of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians. In the past year, he’s been named Entertainer of the Year at the 58th ACM Awards—resulting in the prestigious ACM Triple Crown Award—and Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards—his sixth time earning the award, setting the record for most wins ever in the category.
