There is something familiarly urban, yet discordantly surreal about Chris Stock’s new release Mainroom (Plastik Philosophy Series)

"A slow minimal build up with a just a suggestion of haunting Sci-Fi glitch elements suggests that you might be lured into an alternate reality grounded firmly in an inner city milieu. There is a brooding sense of an atemporal shifting that is neither here nor there, past or present, but uncomfortably now.

As the tempo increases pulling you deeper into the other-worldly soundscape it creates, the technological elements implicit in the architecture of the construction of the album becomes foregrounded. It's as if a new species, a hybrid of music and machine, is trying to communicate through new forms of language. 

It was Techno Legend Derrick May who proclaimed “I want my music to sound like computers talking to each other”, perhaps as this album suggests the next step is the computers trying to talk to us?

Even if Chris does not have such high lofty ideals, though by the clear professionalism of his vision, seamlessness of his mixing, you would have to ask why not? It certainly owes a debt of gratitude to Derrick May and his Detroit contemporaries Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saundersaun. It has the same sense of the pre-eminence of sound texture, suggestions of alienation and the possibility of redemption through soul and futuristic funk.

It has become a cliché to say that good dance music takes you on a journey, though that is exactly what this daring mash-up of tech house, abstract sequencing and progressive house does, an almost Blade Runneresque journey that draws you inexorably to a destination you know is inevitable. I think it is no coincidence that Lauren Beukes’s novel Zoo City, set in the bustling third/first world metropolis of Chris’s hometown, Johannesburg, shares the same themes of uncertain past/future merging into a recognisable edgy environment where reality is in the shadows or scowling behind the beat."
