Chris Tso is a New York City-born, Madison Wisconsin-based, songwriter/composer who’s intrigued by the surge of misinformation that has permeated the world with a narrative creating a different reality for many. He crafts lyrics and music to take you on trips inside the minds of people, either brazenly vocal or quietly living in the margins of society. Why are their convictions so strong? What are their triggers, motivators and how are they so comfortable in the darkness that they occupy? A musical columnist reporting from the center of the fringe.


The single, “Beautiful”, launches with an aggressive kick drum, juxtaposed with acoustic guitars and symphonic baritone guitar swells. Tso describes it as “Confessional vocals describing the pleasant sheen that people see which can mask the conflict and malevolence harbored inside. How will societies evolve and shape public opinion, motivating our darkest urges? Everything is beautiful, but alas, everything is not always beautiful.”

Punk Ballads is a provocative concept: reinterpreting testosterone-heavy angsty punk songs as dreamy, emotional piano ballads recorded live on a mutlitrack tape recorder in various locations where crowds normally gather but are empty due to the pandemic.  Produced by commercial director and creative Jayson Moyer who returned to his home state of Wisconsin after living in Los Angeles and several trips around the globe. Moyer collaborates with Shawndell Marks, a singer/songwriter/pianist often compared to Norah Jones and Christine McVie.

While most of Marks’ previous albums were produced with full bands in well-equipped recording studios, the pair was interested in exploring a stripped-down approach to production, using only 2-3 microphones to record voice and piano or Fender Rhodes. The result is boldly imperfect, raw and soothing, gravel and honey.
