2024 Version of The Warehouse Barbarians Experience

This track is a Tribute to one of my major musical influences and friends over many years, Dan Seals.  Dan passed of a rare lymphatic cancer in 2009. This gorgeous and deep Todd Rundgren song was the biggest hit of his career as England Dan (Seals) & John Ford Coley in 1979. The Resisters on this cut are: Drums: (From Hall & Oates and Daryl's House)- Brian Dunne.  Bass, Electric Guitars, Keys, Percussion, Duet & Harmony Vocals; Zannman.   Acoustic Guitars: Steve Gibson & Mark Casstevens.    Lead & Background Vocals: Dan Seals (Posthumously & Licensed), with Dan Timinski, Allison Krause et. al, & Zannman.

This tribute version will be featured on my upcoming release "Cover This?",  much of which was recorded while I was writing my forthcoming book "Homeless in Minneapolis." 

I consider that period of time as The War of(against)George Floyd- and the events following his death that made the world a better place. This track is dedicated as well to George whom I knew as the "door man"and bouncer  at a popular Latin dance club in NE Minneapolis where I went to enjoy a beer and watch the Salsa dancers.

It started with the keys track by my favorite MD & keys cat Donnie LaMarca.  Then we added the enigmatic Sonny T.- who plays guitars and bass on this version.  He also played bass on Prince's version but did like this one as well..

Enjoy this one take of Pavi with 3 Warehouse Barbarians. Trivia? Pavi's vocal and Sonny's guitars were recorded on Joni Mitchell's 2014 birthday at The Cabin Studios Northeast Minneaplois, which was my living room at 1820 2nd St. NE, MInneapolis.  It was a magic room. Donnie sent his track to me over the InterWeb to inspire the rest of us...  It did.

I have known and loved Liv since years ago in the 70's when our college band #KIDDOG opened for a few of his shows in the Pittsburgh area including our home club at the time, the legendary Tin Pan Alley in #WheelingWV. That tri-level venue  was built and became a New York mafia hangout known as Zellar's SteakvHouse in the prohibition era. We opened  for Liv there as well and he and I became musical friends over coffee and brandy in the downstairs acoustic room.

Over time?  I vividly recall a visit to his home west of #Boston where on that day he was building a birdbath on the back deck and Maggie brought home a pie we shared. Many years later when Maggie went down another road, Liv wrote this beautiful plea for her to simply forget all the marital strife and Just Come Home... Sadly it all ended in a 2003 amicable divorce...

Glen Campbell recorded this song, often touted as the best country ballad of all time in 1968 when I was a high school freshman. Little did I know that 20 years later Glen would become my publisher and that I would get to record with an All Star background choir in Nashville in 1990.  Now and then inspiration and magic strikes like lightening. This is my tribute to Glen, who among several other Nashville legends mentored me and influenced everything I have done since as a songwriter, producer, artist, and recording professional. A Minnesota tribute to The Allman Brothers and Southern Rock, this classic tale of a man trying to win back the woman he loves is musically punctuated by the guitar work of writer Paul Mayasich, the etherial lap steel his Dough Dros. partner Andy Dee, and the most gorgeous mandolin solo I have ever heard in a rock song played by 3-time Grammy winner and father of Newgrass, Sam Bush. Serendipity- In September of 1972 my long journey to the end of this project began with a meeting with Jim Seals & Dash Crofts in Athens Ohio. A few months later I became an adherent of the Baha'i Faith. In the years that followed I began meeting the many musicians, writers, and producers I would later mentor with to learn the crafts of song writing, production, engineering, and advanced musicianship. That week in 1972, Seals & Crofts "Summer Breeze" was at the top of the charts. The mandolin Sam Bush plays on Vidalia is that same mandolin, acquired from Dash Crofts in recent years....strange, but true. The Barbarians this day in September of 2008? Michael Bland, Leland Sklar, Paul Mayasich, Andy Dee, Donnie LaMarca, Sonny T., Billy Franze,  Kevin Bowe, and Zannman.  Sam Bush was recorded at The Cabin South in Brentwood, TN.

Minneapolis Funk written by funky white boys Billy Franze and Zannman in Billy's back yard in North East Minneapolis in 1995 with the lyric, Billy's bass, and a six of Heineken. The first WareHouse Barbarians session ever took place that Summer at Wild Sound in The Ford Centre building by the new Target Field in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis. It  saw NPG members Michael Bland & The Hornheads team with Zannman on bass, Stevie Cherewan on B3, Lee Blaske on clav, and Dave Barry and Billy Franze on electric guitars.  Greg "G#" Sain sang lead. Cool Funk did some CRAZY ad libs as Tom Tucker Sr., Alex Oana, & I were mixing it at CD Underbelly in 1997. Zannman, Cool Funk, and G# clowned the background vocals... This is dedicated to our very beloved friend Tom Tucker Sr., who passed earlier this year. It, and his other work on The Warehouse Barbarians project, is probably among the last work of this amazingly talented, Grammy-award winning engineer and local music legend to ever be released.

Sometimes song accidents happen. This Hilarious song was actually written by Elijah the Non-Profit and Zannman while busking on the "homeless wall" in Dinkytown U of M campus neighborhood. That night Elijah had almost 100 Sorority girls singing it with him on the corner of 4th St SE. Then the 4th Jew was the legendary bassist Leland Sklar... so we had a great deal of fun doing this track. In  the tradition of Chocolate Rain,  50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, You Can Call Me Al and almost anything Weird Al does...enjoy, laugh & sing along... 

Dedicated posthumously to the Memory of Robert Leon Commodore who met his unfortunate end murdered by an unknown assailant on a Minneapolis Uptown bus while still homeless. RIP & God Bless You & Keep You Bro!!!
