Dear friends,
As I have been mixing the Cocoon in-house compilation for the last 9 years, I want to share with you all the episodes of this incredible adventure from the very beginning up until today!

After the first 5 years at Cocoon Recordings, Sven Väth (OFFICIAL) asked me to mix my favorite tracks of the previous years into a nice compilation.
It was a big honor as it was my first big job although my young age, in fact I was only 19! This was definitely a sign of trust!
The name of this compilation is as simple as good: Eins (one) and includes masterpieces like: Roman Flügel – Geht´s Noch, INGO BOSS – Little Eternity, Dinky - Acid in my Fridge or Legowelt – Discorout just to name a few.

Five years Cocoon Recordings, that makes twenty-two 12"es, fourteen Mix-CDs and five Label Compilations. Cocoon youngster Chris Tietjen went about compiling the best tracks of the Cocoon Recordings 12"es to a musical cross-section. The result is a unique mix which contains pieces from recent times (Roman Flügel, Dinky, Oliver Koletzki) as well as tracks from the starting time of the label (Frank Lorber, Glove or Legowelt).
Chris Tietjen's style alternates between groovy tech house and hypnotic minimal sounds, but one can also find driving techno tunes in his record case. However, his sound is not easy to describe, and his sets are always full of surprises and guarantee many hours of frenzy.

For the third time now, Next Generation host Chris Tietjen compiles the best Cocoon releases of the year on one CD and succeeds in providing a mix that is summarizing the party highlights of the past year in a perfect way.  With three artist albums, the Compilation G and numerous 12"es, Cocoon has again set standards in 2007 and is also planning a lot for 2008: besides the upcoming Minilogue album, there is also an album from Extrawelt in sight.Besides the big hits ("Unreliable Virgin", "Hunter" or "Horizon"), Chris has also included some flip side pearls ("My Cube" oder "Alpha Blend") to the CD, and delivers an impeccable 70 minute set that elegantly steps on the border between House and Techno. Nonchalantly he opens with Martin Buttrich's "Hunter, continues with shooting star Lucio Aquilina and developes a driving and groovy atmosphere up to Pig&Dan's "Sly Detector", which marks an emotional highlight before he closes the mix with Adam Proll's "Elevator", Joel Mull's "Harmonautic String" and Jacek Sienkiewicz's "Good Luck". A very atmospheric and competently made mix with carefully chosen highlights!

Since 2005, the 23 year-old Chris Tietjen is a part of the Cocoon family. With his Next Generation series at CocoonClub Frankfurt, he established one of the most important creative pools for upcoming DJ talents; besides that, he regularly provides the listeners with one of the most crucial musical determinations of contemporary Techno. The characteristic elements of Tietjen's understanding of DJ skills are on the one hand the stress of intensive bass lines and driving percussions, but also the respect for the arrangement of the individual tracks. This fourth label compilation presents all dancefloor burners of the last 12 months on Cocoon Recordings in a diversified and coherent mix: Martin Buttrich, Schneider & Galluzzi, Guy Gerber, Tiefschwarz, Reboot, Adam Proll and Timo Maas undisputedly belong to the group of artists who have enhanced electronic dance music in the past year. In his terrific mix, Tietjen focuses on the releases of Swedish duo Minilogue whose CD/DVD album "Animals" belongs to the most successful releases on Cocoon and thus is represented her with three tracks (among them remixes by Dubfire and Tolga Fidan). And when Tietjen briefly reduces the tempo after Timo Maas' brute Tribal masterpiece "Subtellite", only to continue with the Väth classic (and one of the hits in the last season) "The Beauty & the Beast" in a remix by Eric Prydz, one can definitely get an impression of Chris Tietjen's skills as a DJ.

The Cocoon Recordings Mix Compilation Series is celebrating its fifth anniversary: after Chris Tietjen, being still a youngster in 2006, had compiled the label's best tracks of 2006 on the CD "EINS" and thus offered a review on twenty-two 12" maxis, we are now facing "FÜNF", on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of Cocoon Recordings.

Every year, Chris compiles his personal Cocoon highlights in a musical cross-section and each time he produces a very unique mix of the best Cocoon dancefloor bombs of the past 12 months. First came "EINS", then "ZWEI" followed, and meanwhile we have reached "FÜNF. Chris, who is now resident of his own night "Loaded" at Sven Väth's homebase cocoonclub Frankfurt, has now put together the best tracks of 2009 and assembles artists from the likes of Egbert, Tiefschwarz, Electric Rescue, Alex Flatner & Lopazz, Tim Green, Nick Curly, Stefan Goldmann, Julian Jeweil, Extrawelt, Len Faki or Yousef in this mix.

Even if no other contemporary music style is as consistently searching for new sound horizons as electronic dance music does: in the end, the tradition of series within this constant development provides us with well-known structures from the house of Cocoon. 30 years of lived DJ culture, 11 years of label history and, after all, already the sixth mix compilation by Chris Tietjen are events that need to be celebrated this year. The 26-year-old Frankfurter is an essential part of the Cocoon family since 2005 and his annual compilation is on the one hand a most welcome definition of the state-of-the-art of modern Tech-House, and on the other hand shows his own personal development from the promising Rhein Main newcomer to one of the most influential DJs in Europe. In the true sense of Cocoon's publicised aesthetics of the DJ as a mediator of visions apart from the Sync button, Tietjen starts out for a journey through the last 12 months of Cocoon Recordings. And, once again, the acoustic cornucopia is full to bursting, containing tracks by Loco Dice, Dubfire, Phil Kieran, Christian Burkardt and many more: from the Pop Ambient of Fabric resident DJ Arnaud Le Texier ("Elusanes" Beatless Version), Tietjen dives into the depths of Dub with Moritz von Oswald's "Cocoon Dark Dub" before the Vision Quest remix of Dinky's "Acid In My Fridge" sets the signs – careful but unmistakeably – to a more club-esque format. Over the last twelve months, the Cocoon Recordings crew has written another chapter of the German Tech House Book. With releases by Loco Dice, Dominik Eulberg or by shooting stars like Guy Gerber and Pig&Dan, we could celebrate some of the biggest records of 2006. 
Guy Gerber's "Sea of Sand", Eulberg's "Bionik" and Loco Dice's "Carthago" even belong to the absolute high-flyers, and with Fuckaponydelic's "Switch the Lights", the first big release of this year is also included. "ZWEI" continues where the first label revue "EINS" had stopped and will be anticipated particularly by fans and clubbers who don't have a record player anymore but have not completely switched to mp3 yet. 
A CD containing the best of the current Cocoon releases, compiled and mixed smoothly by CocoonClub's Next Generation host Chris Tietjen.

Laurent Garnier ist nicht nur der dritte Pariser, der Ramona in diesem Monat beehrt, sondern auch der – mit Verlaub – sagenhafteste. Im Manchester der späten Achtziger hat es den begeisterten Musikliebhaber und damaligen Gastronomie-Azubi per Zufall hinter die Plattenteller eines namenslosen Clubs verschlagen, wo er den Hunger der anwesenden Meute mit allerlei Gedöns zwischen Abba und Zappa stillen musste. Nachdem er sich dort die Hörner abgestoßen hatte, folgte der nächste Club mit besserem Musikprogramm und auch heute noch klingendem Namen.
In der Hacienda durfte Garnier neben Mike Pickering und Graeme Park an dem Soundtrack einer Stadt Teil haben, die zwischen New Order und den Happy Mondays schlichtweg in afroamerikanische Tanzmusik verliebt war. So drehten die überspannten Clubkids umhüllt von der schwarz-gelben Nuklearästhetik des Clubs, Woche für Woche Pirouetten zu Songs von Carly Simon, Jomanda, oder dem FPI Project und Tracks von Adonis, Derrick May und DJ Pierre.
Zurück in Paris und derart geschult, wollte Laurent Garnier auch Frankreich den „Summer Of Love“ bringen. Einem Club namens „Wake Up“ und seinem nicht zu bremsenden Enthusiasmus sei Dank, sollte er nicht nur dieses Vorhaben in die Tat umsetzen, sondern auf dem Label FNAC bzw. F-Com Platten veröffentlichen, Techno in Frankreich installieren, mit seinem Plattenkoffer durch die Welt reisen und schließlich mit „Electrochoc“ ein Buch veröffentlichen, von dem sich einige DJ-Autoren ein Scheibchen abschneiden könnten. Eine der letzten wirklich großen DJ-Figuren unserer Zeit, dabei grundsympathisch und zwischen Techno und King Tubby auch noch musikalisch versiert wie kaum ein zweiter DJ. Was für ein homme du métier!

Top-notch DJs and producers are often known for their globe-trotting ways, but Magda takes it to another level. Born in Poland, she came of age in Detroit and was eventually adopted by Richie Hawtin and the rest of the Minus Records crew. Now living in Berlin, she's been in the news as of late after the (somewhat surprising) announcement that she was leaving Minus after more than a decade and instead focusing on Items & Things, a label she runs with Marc Houle and Troy Pierce. Although the split was amicable, it does represent the start of an important new chapter in the techno veteran's career, so we figured that now would be a good time for her to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. True to form, Magda has delivered a deep, complex mix that often features three our four tracks playing at once while she combines techno—of both the pulsing Detroit and minimal variety—with bits of house, disco, and a few other surprises. Magda's future may be wide open, but there is little doubt that her DJ abilities are still on-point.

Artist Short Bio
Hailing from greater Frankfurt and being part of the former „next generation of cocoon artists“ Chris Tietjen looks at an impressive career which started already at a young age. 

His musical taste is based on a foundation of funk, hip hop and reggae and was finally shaped and developed under the influence of artists and mentors like Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos. No wonder the former cocoon protégé played almost every bigger cocoon festival stage and clubs such as Amnesia Ibiza, Cocoonclub Frankfurt, Nature One or Green & Blue (just to name a few).

Touring all year long and being an active part of the current Frankfurt scene Tietjen is not only working on his DJ skills. He also checks into his studio or join forces with his production partners and musical allies Christian Burkhardt, Reboot or Markus Fix. Tietjen’s productions can be found on labels like Epilog, Moan and of course on Cocoon which also hosts his „inhouse mix series“. 

Vinyl-lover and afterhour-marathon-man Chris Tietjen seems the be the perfect combination of oldskool musical influences and modern and contemporary party styles. Someone who keeps the innocent underground spirit of the great techno and house era alive but keeps on developing to a proper and grown up artist at the same time. 

Tietjen is working on his own style and taste and just doesn't follow the technology and trends of the club mainstream. Keep on spinning Chris and get the party started!
