81 years ago today, on Dec. 13, 1937, Japanese troops invaded the Chinese city of Nanking, killing 300,000 civilians, including children, over the course of six weeks. Raping and executions were widespread. Today, the Rape of Nanking continues to be a unifying legacy for many Chinese, and a source of deep intergenerational trauma, and also healing, for its survivors and their descendants. 

For Caleb and I, this was our attempt to honour that history through art while also reminding ourselves that atrocities perpetrated by those in power onto those with less power continue to happen, everyday, both here and there. May we never forget, and may we never stop fighting for justice.

The Rape of Nanking

Chris Tse is a spoken word artist currently based in Whitehorse, Yukon. He placed second at both the 2011 Poetry Slam World Cup and 2016 Rio International Poetry Slam, and is a former Canadian national slam champion. Tse has shared the stage with Martin Luther King III, Demi Lovato, and Imagine Dragons, and formerly toured across North America with the internationally-acclaimed Kenyan Boys Choir.
