This is my closing set recorded live at Faggots Are Women in NYC. FAW isn’t one of those mid parties begging for attention, promising collective moral high ground without doing anything. This party is an entire world—full of gags, friendship, and intention. The art, copy, door policy, sound, lights, chill areas—and its very existence in today’s USA—is T. It bubbled up from a scene that needs it, agitates the status quo, and doesn’t seek outside validation—IYKYK.

Its theme: “Faggots are FLINTA*s: Escape from Berlin.” We know New Yorkers love to say “Berlin is over” (while others say NYC is over). Some say Berlin is known for cheap living, liberated mindsets, world-class nightlife, and hot people - but it’s also dark and easy to disappear. For me, how you feel there has always been an inkblot test: it depends on who you are right now. 

But since Oct 7, 2023, Berlin has changed radically. A place known for freedom of expression has descended in to a McCarthyist hellscape for pro-Palestine activists. Cultural institutions cooperate by silencing dissenting views, and police enforce this with overtly racist brutality. It affects everything — everyday life, art, music, dancing and fun.

Obviously the political situation is similarly bleak in the US. It feels like a bizarre time to celebrate, but also a critical time to be together with the people you love. This is why the level of intention here is important: worldbuilding by and for a community, even just for a night, has the power to nourish us in so many ways.

And so I tried to match that level for the closing. Not gonna spoil the references, but they are thick and deep, and call on some very important voices. It’s usually hard to listen back to a live set without focusing on the flaws. But in this recording, I think of Charlene giving me a quick face beat en route, the unsure gays when I started, the grind-train of culturatti dolls towards the end, and the gaggle of Colombian queers losing it for Shakira. The room was unhinged and alive, full of the best. This is for those who were there—and for those who get it.

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.

This was maybe my fourth time ever playing techno, and it felt incredible to be given the trust to close the main room at Zero Chill, NYC's hottest rave. After nearly 20 years of DJing—mostly known for house, sometimes ambient—it was a thrill to stretch into a harder, faster prime-time slot for a massive, raging warehouse crowd. Pride 2025 called for a disco-flavored last hour to honor our origins and ancestors.

I’ve never had so many people DM me after a set, and it’s got me inspired to keep exploring this direction in the techno landscape.

Special thanks to my dears Dirty Daddy Don and Physical Therapy for lacing me with some tracks for the night. It takes a village.
