These recordings utilise the ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française) stereo recording technique.

This method of recording involves two cardioid condenser microphones placed 17cm apart at an angle of 110º; the average measurements of the placement of ears on a person's head.
The microphones are then panned one fully left and one fully right so that when the recordings are listened back (through headphones preferably) it sounds as though you are standing right where the microphones were during the recording.

I used two AKG C414 microphones connected to a Lexicon Lambda interface. Recording were done in Logic.


"Gone for a Smoke" is a recording of my housemate descending three flights of stairs before proceeding to the garden for a cigarette through the back door in my ground floor bedroom. The microphones are set up in my bedroom. During the recording I tried popping bubble wrap, playing violin and using hairspray in the background for a richer stereo texture.

"Redland Road" involved placing the mics just outside the back door (under cover) during some bad weather. The back door is near a main road (Redland Road) so cars can be heard shooting past throughout. I also faded in some music very quietly in the house at one point to further test the sensitivity of the mics.

Redland Road

A soundscape that depicts an alien spacecraft landing in a forest environment. Created using all original recordings and fabrications, with the exception of a couple of BBC library effects i.e. harsh wind sounds and dogs barking.

Recordings made using a stereo matched pair of AKG C414s (and the ORTF technique for background atmosphere) and a Rode NT1-a (for other effects) with a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 interface connected to Logic Pro 9.

Other effects made using heavily processed recordings of car starter motors and various other things, plus some synthesised from various plugins.

'Visitors' - A soundscape of an alien landing

Some of the music I wrote for a prohibition era-based film made by final year university of Bristol students. I sampled I Can't Give You Anything But Love by Louis Armstrong for the latter half of the track.

It was written for a dance scene in which two characters, The Artist and Mr Suave, compete for the affections of a lady.

A take of audio from the feature film I worked on operating the boom mic. This shot used an Audio Technica shotgun microphone connected to a Sound Devices 302 mixer, recorded in 96kHz 24-bit on a Tasscam DR-40.
