Disquiet Junto Project 0472: Jam Time (1 of 3)
The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio that others will complete.

Step 1: This week’s Junto project is the first in a sequence intended to invite, encourage, and reward collaboration. You will be recording something with the understanding that it will remain unfinished for the time being. Your part will be done, but more will happen. Read on.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive it as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in.

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly two to three minutes in length, as described in Step 2. When done, if possible, pan the audio so that your piece is solely in the left side of the stereo spectrum.

Step 4: Also, and this is important, be sure, when done, to make your track downloadable, because it will be used by someone else in the next Disquiet Junto project.

key of D, 115 bpm. This is built from samples of me plucking strings and tapping on my tamboura. One loop of live performance is repeated at intervals over patterns created with the samples. Some filtering on the percussive element. Logic.

Disquiet0472 Rebel Cross(1of3)

Week two of the Disquiet Junto Collaborations.

I've chosen to work on the piece Polylingual Chaos by Stefan Strasser.

It's a cool sound and took a while to figure out sections. I went with adding percussion and to find a regular structure in it. I'm pretty sure after this everyone's going to be putting all their kick drums panned all the way right, new industry standard.

I've used the SR88 drum pattern sequencer in lots of my music, actually its in nearly all of it but its so handy using it to create hi-hats in time but also at random. Then added kick drums and snare depending on how they suited the sections and to give it some flow through each part and to build to the end.

All done in Ableton.

This disquiet junto 0473 [part 2 of 3] track, "The Wolf's Baleen," was inspired by the disquiet junto 0472 [part 1 of 3] recording by Chris Ludwidge [https://soundcloud.com/chrisledwidge ] called "No. 34 in Am" [ https://soundcloud.com/chrisledwidge/no-34-in-am-disquiet0472 ].

"I was so overwhelmed by the work by composer, Chris Ludwidge, and his disquiet junto 0472 piece, "No. 34 in Am," that I promptly downloaded it and got to work for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment, 'Placebo Effect."

I had but three hours to compose my piece, "The Wolf's Baleen," and knew I would have to fly into it. What struck me about the floating fragments of Chris' piece was how much it reminded me of some of Brian Eno's piano fragments and treatments on "Ambient #1: Music for Airports"; thus, I set out instinctively to complement Chris' tinklings on the piano: I first learned his piano figures, mimicked them, and based emphatic stylings upon certain notes (namely the B-flat note), adding treatments, such as a rhythmic delay and erratic reverberation changes.

I would write more, but my time has run out at the studio.
