A Message From Your Pastor Chris Oyakhilome-

The relationships we have with others ought to be wide paths of gratitude and thanksgiving. Too often we get bogged down in the information on our interactions. We make matters transactional and keep a mental tally of who owes what to whom. Even when we do remember to say “thank you” to one another, we’re virtually consistently referring to only one activity or favor.

How regularly might we find a way to thank a person not only for something they've done, but for who they are and for what they actually mean to us?

I’m reminded of a story in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus heals 10 lepers of their afflictions, in contemplating this. Of the 10 who are healed, only one makes the attempt to say “thank you.” However he isn’t merely saying thank you. He falls down and praises God because of what’s happened. It’s clear he understands who Jesus actually is. Jesus recognizes this by declaring that the man’s religion has made him well, beyond the easy curing of the disease. By offering thanks and praise, the guy showed that he not only appreciated what was done for him, but that he desired to maintain relationship with God from that day forward.

As we gather with our families and friends for Thanksgiving and the holidays that were forthcoming, we're given the same chance as this guy who had been cured by Jesus. We now have the opportunity to show gratitude to individuals in our own lives, but we must go beyond merely thanking individuals for what they’ve done. If we need the people we care about to know how significant they may be to us, then we should tell them. We must thank them for simply being parents, our friends, kids, siblings, relatives or whatever they could be. If we need those relationships to be as substantive and as deep as they ought to be, then they have to be cherished much above anything else we appreciate or value.

All of the great things in our lives flow in the relationships we have with other, and specially from that most significant relationship that people have with God.

So, this year let’s not merely thank people for what they’ve done.

THREE KINDS OF WISDOM FROM PASTOR CHRIS

We're beginning a new year in our church liturgies, starting with our time of preparation for the coming of Jesus through his arrival through his life in this new year. We detect, I think, that it's a period of hope and a time of happiness as we celebrate this season of Advent.

We are expecting some things that are incredible. Yes, there are the end times that we heard about in the Gospel which may appear to some of us something to dread.  But this was not how the first disciples felt. They were look ahead, apprehensive for Jesus to return, to bring the fullness of his reign into being; they desired it to happen. They were expecting this with great enjoyment until gradually, they started to realize it was not going to occur in their lifetimes.
.
So once more during this season of Advent, we too look forward to that end time and are interested in being sure that we're not like the householder in Jesus's parable -- a man who never willing to keep himself safe because he didn't understand that the moment of truth could come at any time. We need to be ready all of the time. But of course, we also celebrate during Advent not simply the coming of Jesus of course at the end of time — we're celebrating his coming into human history.
