A collection of various unreleased remixes from the last 20 years or so. Some of these were done for labels but never got released for one reason or another, one or two have been released on vinyl but never digitally, a couple were done for remix comps and some just for my own amusement.

"Inner Tribe Records Remixed’ delivers 12 brand new remixes of notable cuts from the Inner Tribe Records catalogue. The album, released 8th April 2022, sees London UK producer Chris Read place his spin on a dozen songs from the label, with a list of featured artists which includes Detroit rap legend Phat Kat, long time Dilla collaborator Steve Spacek, Japan’s Mitsu the Beats, Ubiquity Records’ Ohmega Watts, Sydney Broken Beat-Soul producer Edseven and late Oakland MC Zion-I among many others. 

Remixes of tracks by New York vocalist Tan Brown alongside Sydney sider Edseven and Inner Tribe mainstays Planetself bring a contemporary Neo Soul flavour to the table, while reworks of cuts by a cast of rappers that includes John Robinson, Tokyo Dawn’s Stan Smith and Yarah Bravo ensure Hip Hop is well represented. Styles and influences merge throughout: Read’s remix for Dream Crews (Mitsu the Beats & Flow4dayz) effortlessly blends influences that include 80s Synth Boogie, contemporary Hip Hop and 90s R&B, while more uptempo reworks of tracks featuring Inner Tribe label boss Inkswel plus Colonel Red, Steve Spacek and Harvey Sutherland draw influence from London’s Broken Beat sound. Whatever the feel or tempo, Jazz is a unifying theme in this collection assembled by a producer whose work perfectly encapsulates the meeting point of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop and the myriad contemporary sounds those genres spawned."

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, Wax Poetics has teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read.

Wax Poetics x Classic Material: #HIPHOP50 Mixtape Playlist

Respected producer, renowned digger, and prolific DJ, Chris Read has been releasing and compiling music on BBE for many years now, both as a solo artist and as producer of electronic soul outfit Maylight. Created in collaboration with Chicago rapper and vocalist Pugs Atomz, 'Colours Of The World', started life when the latter was in London recording and touring with BBE label-mate and mutual friend DJ Vadim's group The Electric. Having recorded a small collection of tracks during Pugs' time in London town, two of which appeared
Chris Read's 2015 producer collection'All Night’, the duo continued to exchange ideas and recordings across the pond after Pugs’ return to his native Chicago, completing the album with the addition of several guest vocalists and musicians from both Chicago and London.

A true hip hop renaissance man, Pugs Atomz has travelled the world several times over, always making a lasting impression thanks to his energetic stage performances, forward-thinking attitude and highly relatable lyrics. Mix-tape maestro and sample head, Chris Read's beat-making credentials simply cannot be overstated. 'Colours Of The World' bridges the gap between traditional boom-bap sonics and future soul, utilizing obscure jazz fragments to create dazzling sonic mosaics; smooth, sumptuous and soulful throughout. Taken from the album 'Digging the KPM Vaults', a collaboration between Sony EMI's KPM label and WhoSampled.com comprising tracks created using samples from the legendary KPM 1000 series library records. The track contains samples of compositions by John Cameron, Barry Morgan, Berry Lipman and Herbie Flowers. Vocals performed by Lumi HD.

Remix for Swedish duo Chords and Promoe (who were signed to Warner in Europe at the time). This remix was set to be the b-side for the Supermarket Sweep single which was scheduled to be released by Jazz Fudge in the UK. Jazz Fudge went out of business shortly after this was put together and so the single never materialised.

In the closing months of 2012 BBE label artist Chris Read was enlisted by classic Los Angeles imprint Delicious Vinyl to produce a mixtape for Wax Poetics magazine celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the release of The Pharcyde's seminal debut LP 'Bizarre Ride'. The resulting mix was a runaway success clocking tens of thousands of plays online and kickstarted a relationship with the label that would go on to see Chris remix two of the group's best loved tracks, 'Runnin' and 'Passin Me By'.

Those tracks are now available for the first time on this limited edition BBE x Delicious Vinyl double vinyl 7inch release. Treating the familiar original with respect, Chris has called upon the vocal talents of long time collaborators Lizzy Parks (Tru Thoughts) and guitarist Giles Barratt (Breakin Bread) to rework passages from 'Runnin' to create a 2014 update on the themes of the much loved Jay Dee produced classic. 'Passin Me By' meanwhile gets a '90s throwback rework utilising sample material from the original to great effect to create a track which bears all the hallmarks of the golden era.
Mastered and cut by Walter Coelho who cut Jay Dee's 'Welcome to Detroit' back in 2001, the circle is complete!

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Part 2 of this first edition in the series documents Hip Hop’s progression through the years 1984 to 1987, an era in which the dominant sound of Hip Hop changed drastically with the increasing popularity of drum machine programmed beats and early sampling technology. In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this mix pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from 1979 to 1986 utilising only the Funk, Soul, Disco and Boogie tracks from which they were originally constructed. #HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #1 (1979-1986) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this second mix follows on from last week's drop, piecing together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1987, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

New compilation from Norwegian based label So Real International: "Vol. 2: The Reintroduction" is out 25th August and features a stellar line up of artists from all over the world.

This track was originally recorded by Pugs and I whilst working on the 'Colo(u)rs of the World' album, but ultimately was not included, partly because it felt slightly out of place with the general vibe of the album. It was recorded during the time of the London riots and references what was going on in the City at the time. I don't like to see things go to waste though, so we're now offering it up as a bonus track. You can buy the track exclusively from Bandcamp with proceeds donated to NHS Charities Together.
