The Project: Do something you’ve been putting off.

A long overdue experiment with processing vocals through a Red Panda Particle granular delay with pitch-shift.

Signal chain is: vocals through a Zoom H1n > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, set on reverse delay + reverb > Red Panda Particle on pitch-shift setting. Everything performed live in the moment, with a bit of EQ to tame lows and brighten, and two edits after the fact for time and composition. For each section, I sang one sustained note and listened until I got a pitch-shift pattern that I liked, then I 'froze' it with the Chop control to create a loop, and improvised the other vocal parts over it in real-time.

Our first performance, from the 2021 Circuit Benders Ball. In the backyard at sunset. Most sound sources are from 2 microphones placed in long plastic pipes tuned to 2 specific frequencies (C and F). Then processed by modular, effects, filters, etc.

The Project: Make music with 10 acoustic instrument samples all in a shared key.

Thank you to @daniel-diaz for the beautiful samples!

I was inspired by the chord progression in the melodica sample, so I used that as a base to created a rhythmically-shifting generative drone in the Borderlands Granular app on my iPad, eventually using all 10 of the samples. It was a fun challenge mapping the patchwork of waveforms across the screen so that I could trigger different parts of overlapping samples with various moving 'circles' of granular processing. The end result came out rather lilting and mysterious.

The sequence starts with a cable connection to the clock output from the Steady State Fate Ultra Random module. This clock output was sent to an intellijel hub mult. From here the clock was sent to first to a 4ms RCD/QCD, Delptronics Trigger Man, and to the MakeNoise Rene. First output gates from 4ms RCD 4 divide output to the trigger input on the Braids module top row, running in "WLIN" mode. The second multi-output was sent to a 4ms QCD output green channel 4, set at a division trigger time of 16. This would trigger single notes on the "Elements" module, that begins at 1:42. The playback mode is running in "Secret Easter Egg Mode" :-) The selected note sequence from the QCV output from Rene. The final output from Elements was sent to the Eventide "Pitch" pedal using the "Crystalizer" algorithm.

Clouds - was processing recorded chunks from the drum percussion, kick used from the top row "Peaks" 808 kick drum synthesis model. Then a snare was created from the "grey" noise output from the SSF Quantum rainbow running through the right side of Streams to make a snare drum, which was running in envelope mode with shape position to the left, short decay. Then a third voice uses the blue noise output from the SSF quantum rainbow for hi-hats. Amplitude triggered/controlled by a HexVCA. The drum sequence was programmed from the Delptronics Triggerman, using all 8 patterns stringed together running in pattern play mode but being CV controlled by the S&H # 1 output from the SSF Ultra Random. Output for all voices was grouped and multiplied into two separate mixers. First three channels of the Intellijel Mutamix, which was then sent to output channel B. From there the summed mix was sent into the "left" side input of Clouds. Then triggered in time with the sequence by an 8th division trigger from the 4ms RCD. The freeze input in Clouds was triggered in time 7th divisions from the 4ms RCD, so that the chunks would process and record then playback in spurts of timed randomness. The mode was set in the pitch-shifter/time stretcher configuration, where the grains were spliced so that created interesting granular pitching repeats and percussive glitch effects, as the rhythmic beats played through. Focused ranges were selected for the "Density/Pitchshifter" and "Timestetcher/Texture" controls. These were being controlled by the S&H #2 output from the SSF Ultra Random. The 1/volt pitch input was controlled by the toggle A/B output from the SSF ultra random. The clean drum outputs were also sent to channels 5, 6, and 7 on the Blue Lantern "Mix 'Em Up" module.

Streams left side processing from the MakeNoise Mysteron output, which was being triggered by the 5th division output, for the metallic ripple delay like sounds, with the mutation knob set to counter-clockwise, low bit mode.
The "Shelves" module was processing the acid-like filter parts that get un-muted at 12 seconds. The sound source running into "Shelves" was the "Braids" module bottom row, running in "CSAW" mode. CV controlled by the CV output from the MakeNoise Rene sent to another intellijel hub mult. From here each CV output was sent to the "Frequency" inputs pink, green, and white jacks on "Shelves". The "Tides" high tide output modulation the CV controlling the top frequency input on "Shelves" Each filter knob was set so the incoming "CSAW" input was being processed like a formant filter effect.

Smooth Sub OSC bassline coming from the MakeNoise STO. This was being CV controlled by an intellijel ￼µScale (B) output. Playing back 8 notes while being triggered from the 2nd division trigger on the 4ms RCD. Triangle wave output from an Intellijel Dixie (synced) to the sequence controlling the input (1V/Oct). Second STO at 55 seconds, alternating high note triggers from the 1 channel output from the 4ms QCD 6th division output. The second STO output was sent to a MakeNoise Optomix for short quick plucks.

Disquiet Junto Project 0541: 10BPM Techno
The Assignment: Make some snail-paced beats.
Option 1: Record some 10BPM techno.

For this weeks project I chose option 1. 
I used Logic Pro (it goes all the way down to 5BPM), two instances of SonicVibes Microtonic, time stretched samples and various synth plugins. Trying to make something this slow was interesting, the space between things is more apparent and made the sound selection more important, the space needed "space". Its only 16 bars long but runs for just over 7 minutes.... It's quite the dirge, with a few moments that reminded me of a certain soundtrack.....

APOB - 10BPM (A Clockwork Lozenge) [disquiet0541]

Its been a while since I participated in a Disquiet Junto. This weeks theme was 10 BPM Techno. I designed the main parts at ~130 bpm, then ran the clock down to 10 bpm, and adjusted envelopes, effects, etc from there to make it gel a little more. Obviously some subdivided delay works wonders here. The lead is STO through MMG into Mimeophon. Bass line is AI011 into 2hp LPF (great acid style filter) starting out straight, then as that gets samey samey, it morphs into being processed through Beads for some variety and... Beads-iness. Drums are 2hp Kick and Snare, and Pico Drum2 for hihat. Clocks for all are from Pams. And lead and bass lines are from O&c Quantermain. I could do more with this track, so I consider this an initial sketch - hopefully I'll come back to this soon.

Origins is a varied affair, with a heavy focus on the space between the notes. The uncluttered rhythms allows the elements to breathe and move between each other. Yet other songs give birth to densely packed IDM-inspired percussion, while the acoustic elements really take their time to bubble up. In Origins, there is both darkness and light, and all feels as mysterious as our own beginning.
