The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

One of the true pioneers of live disco and dance music in Britain over the last 15 years gets its grips into our mix series. Off the back of their excellently selected curation 12" series on 2020 vision and the banger filled remix series(featuring Gerd Janson, DJ Nature and more) of their seminal "Age Of Ego" album from back in 2019 it has proved that Crazy P show no signs of slowing down. A talent from an impossibly young age, Chicago producer and DJ Ron Trent began his musical career aged 14, the year he produced the febrile, wild Chicago anthem "Altered States". His production output has barely let up since, minting numerous labels and sub labels to release his and other's music, most notably Prescription Records, which helped define the smoky and jazz-indebted sound of deep house in the 1990s. Chrissy is a genre-bending DJ/producer with releases on Hooversound Recordings, Sorry Records, Classic Music Company, 17 Steps, Dansu Discs, Pets Recordings, and more. He’s known for his friendly demeanor, big smile, and unwavering support for new artists and marginalized communities in our scene—traits that shine through in his expansive, multi-genre DJ sets. His selections often center on rave music, Chicago house, and disco, but his multi-decade career has ranged from jungle to footwork to freestyle. This unique form of story-telling has brought him to venues such as Panorama Bar and Fabric, as well as prior residencies at Smartbar in Chicago, and San Francisco’s oldest and most storied queer club, The Stud.

Also known as a well-regarded voice on dance music history, Chrissy ran the popular “My Year of Mixtapes” blog, posting original genre-focused DJ mixes every week for a year. He wrote the liner notes for Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1997, compiled the forthcoming Montreal disco retrospective Move Up Energize for Unidisc Music, and has written on dance music history, queer history, and advice for young musicians in Mixmag, Beatportal, DJ Mag, Red Bull Music Academy, XLR8R, and Electronic Beats.

His latest venture is a new record label called Maximum Airtime: a DIY, grass-roots, anti-corporate operation featuring upfront, melody-forward rave bangers from ABSOLUTE., Coco Cole, Tim Reaper, Fear-E, Guchon, Hard Ton, Mister Wallace, and more.

Chrissy is also a mainstay of dance music radio, dropping in for regular guest mixes on BBC 6 Music, NTS, Rinse FM, and The Lot Radio. His monthly Maximum Airtime radio program airs every third Thursday on Dublab.
