Voicemail from Cindy Pinion - About the 25th Annual Boxcar Pinion Memorial Bluegrass Festival

Ng Chor Guan, composer from Malaysia, improvised on the piano inside the studio at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California.  The open doors allowed the chorus of crickets to get involved.  I was standing on the threshold, wondering if Guan was listening to the crickets and/or if the crickets were listening to Guan.  The merlin from Manitoba, an accidental improvisor, worked her way into the piece thanks to the Borror Laboratory of Bioacoustics.  Frogs captured on a spring evening in the rose garden of the Chattanooga Choo Choo complex tie it all together, but these creatures see a great change at the end of the piece, just as they are experiencing great change in their environment on the Southside in Chattanooga.

At the end of the party, after so much amazing music had been sung and played, most instruments packed up, just a few singers left around the table... Jana and Lon had been preparing to sing their version of "I wish my Baby was Born" when Philip started to sing just a snippet of "Farther Along."  His song got picked up and shared by the group for a minute, and then Jana and Lon proceeded with their song.  So many songs, and too little time.  I love that my home is a place where friends and strangers feel welcome to open their hearts and sing... and on this night in particular, when we were mourning the loss and honoring the life of sweet Brandy Davis.
