In Gedenken an Margarethe Schütte-Lihotzky und alle Widerstandskämpfer*innen gegen den Nationalsozialismus

Die Gefangenen kommunizierten mittels vereinfachter Morsecodes, in Wäsche eingenähte Nachrichten, aber auch durch die Klosettleitungen, wenn man das Wasser aus dem Syphon auspumpte und den Kopf in das Klosett steckte. "Dann konnte man mit der Nebenzelle sprechen, so wie wenn man in einem Zimmer gewesen wär. Durch die vier Stockwerke waren an einem Klosettstrang 20 Menschen. Auf diese Weise haben wir den ersten Mai 1942 trotz Einzelhaft gefeiert", so Schütte-Lihotzky.

This piece is about the work and life of Margarethe Schütte-Lihotzky (1987-2000), an architect and resistance fighter who stood in for women's rights, social housing and peace. She lived and/or worked in many different countries, travelled extensively and brought inspirations from abroad into her work as an architect. I was asked to do a piece about her for a performance called 'party congress of the arts' and decided to use 12 different speakers each diffusing texts she wrote on her work and life in the language of the place where she travelled to or lived at during that time, starting chronologically with her first trip to the Netherlands in 1919. I tried to give a spacial dimension of her life and work, and a glimpse into the multitude of influences, sounds and cultures she was exposed to. 

Facing the impossibility to translate a multichannel sound installation into an accessible stereo file, as it totally flattens the space: what you hear here is a stretched version of the original piece now called 'a life: margarethe schütte-lihotzky'. You will have to imagine the space! Or invite the work to be played in a space where the speakers can be distributed, or move, and where the listeners can choose their point of hearing.

sound of the performance 'the reason we sway' where we explore translations into sounds and gestures of emotional, sensorial and mental states experienced by persons with mental imbalances like the autism spectrum, and observations of the animal and vegetal world. how might complex conversations of species and whole ecosystems sound like? is it possible to come closer to a different way of perceiving? what does a bird hear? can a tree sense a connection to surrounding plants through their roots? how to connect to a living being that is unfamiliar to us?

soundinstallation for the Cd launch 'Turning Dreams and Shifting Harbors' by the labels beaurivage and (k-raa-k)3 at Recyclart, Brussels; mixing sounds from the Cd and from the art installation of the same name showed at the L.A. Biennial 2003.
