Narin: At The Changing Of The Tide

Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano. Composed for the collaborations of the flute, cello and composition studios at the University of Michigan. Premiered at the University of Michigan, Stamps Auditorium, April 2014. Live recording from the premiere.

Orion

There is a word in Brazilian Portuguese, “Saudade,” which means, ‘a love of someone, something or someplace that is missing or lost and may, or may never, return.’ It speaks of a strong desire, a loneliness, an emptiness, a homesickness, a nostalgia, a depth of feeling where one’s greatest sorrow and greatest joy meet at their source. “Riamh” is an Irish word that, depending on its context, may either mean ‘ever,’ ‘never,’ or ‘always.’ The word bears within itself a paradox that above all is eternal in its essence. “A Taisce,” literally meaning ‘my treasure,’ is an Irish term of endearment that colloquially means, ‘my darling.’

I. “When love awakens in your life, in the night of your heart, it is like the dawn breaking within you.”

Inspired by the work of John O’Donohue, Anam Cara seeks to illustrate the Celtic philosophy of the Anam Cara, or literally, ‘soul friend.’ The idea of the Anam Cara cuts across all of modern society’s conventional ideas of friendship and love, speaking of a kinship that is eternal and sacred, a recognition of ancient belonging between two souls that spans beyond our own individual experiences of time. The Anam Cara, according to O’Donohue, is the most beautiful encounter of a person’s life.

Suite for Caoimhín (waltz/jig)

While hopefully awaiting reunion with a loved one, I came across the Irish word ‘luisne’ in the writing of John O’Donohue: meaning blush or glow, he was describing the color of the sky just before dawn. This image and the subtle intimacy of the word seemed to reflect my experience in these final moments of anticipation: hope, fear, waiting for overwhelming joy.
