Dystopian Prelude One

Latency marks its 10th anniversary with a special collection of commissioned works by HTRK, Damsel Elysium, and Tarawangsawelas. The three artists have crafted individual soundscapes that were showcased during the label night, held in the picturesque gardens of Villa Medici, Rome, on 26 June 2023. 

Originating from Melbourne, HTRK (pronounced ​“Hate Rock”) is a duo comprising Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang. With a discography spanning releases on labels like Ghostly, Boomkat, and their own imprint N&J Blueberries, Jonnine and Nigel have crafted a truly unique sound over the past decade. Their performances can be seen at a variety of venues like the Sydney Opera House and Rewire. 

London-based Damsel Elysium is a multifaceted artist who spans the realms of sound, visual art, and performance. Damsel utilises improvisational double bass, violin, piano and original field recordings to explore alternative connections with physical spaces and nature. They have collaborated with artists such as FKA Twigs, Celeste, Cktrl, Matt Maltese and the London Contemporary Orchestra. 

Tarawangsawelas is an Indonesian duo from Bandung. They are masters of the Tarawangsa, a traditional Sundanese instrument from West Java employed in ceremonies celebrating bountiful harvests. By combining the string instrument with a series of effect units, Tarawangsawelas conjure contemplative and hypnotic compositions while making traditional music accessible to a wider audience.

Sinopsis:
Millones de seres conviviendo sobre un mismo espacio,una pulsación constante vibrando, un rugido generando una sinfonía disonante compuesta por un sin fin de ruidos superpuestos. Grabaciones realizadas en diferentes ciudades del mundo se entrelazan ,paisajes sonoros como si fueran parte de una gigantesca criatura invisible hecha de sonidos y distorsiones que se perciben con la piel y filtran con la mente.

Al Fin El Campo

A stereo mixdown taken from a four channel site-specific sound installation at Newarke Gateway, Leicester as part of "in Situ" commissioned by Leicester De Montfort University in partnership with IRCAM. Using contemporary field recordings mixed with archive sounds, the piece evokes the importance of a brown field site in England in shaping mythologies of nationalism and identity. In this case, the contested site of The Battle of Bosworth.

Viaje inmóvil | Immobile Journey

Synopsis:
Late into the night, a fleet of rusting fishing boats and rubber dinghies are setting sail to the Old Continent from the beach of Zuwara, Libya, Africa. The land on which the European Union extended its tentacles till five decades ago.
Today the Mediterranean has become a border fenced off by barbed wires through which thousands of dead lives in the waters can never cross.
Tonight is another night that countless innocent people lose their lives. It’s just another night that one of the dinghies being swallowed by the waves, vanishing into the soundless, gloomy Mediterranean Sea. We are left with nothing but heart-wrenching screams, powerless arms, freezing cold, splashing waves, and troubled waters.
When the Sun comes up tomorrow, politicians will hang their head in shame preparing new declarations for the TV shows, more promises for the newspaper's columns, different news to spread throughout radio speakers. But when the urge is gone, the deads will be forever forgotten.
