My sister and I cared for mum in her own home for the last ten years, going every day. Mum had been diagnosed with vascular dementia. This song is more about what I could see coming, the bad days, as at this time mum was still more lucid than not. Daphne Gennery passed away peacefully on the 30th of August 2025 at the age of 95, in her own home, in her own bed.....something that she always wanted....no hospital or care home.

I reckon human nature is easy to explain. either it’s driven by love, or it’s driven by hate, or most often: anything between. I also guess, love driven people tend to look for similarities between individuals, whereas hate driven people focus on differences. appetency towards friends vs appetency towards foes. that’s humans, just that easy, just that conflicting…

anyway, here comes a song dedicated to something most human. a very special kind of moment that connects all of us billions of times each day or rather night. a moment that should actually tell us how absurd hate is.

Those of us who know Splintered Finger's music come to expect production quality that sets the bar. “On The Fortunes Of The Wind” immediately brought forth, in my mind, the melody and lyrics of the American Folk Classic, “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” circa 1894. Seven years ago I would buy my then nursing wife extra sleeping time by rolling our first child up and down the hills of Laguna Beach while singing this song to him. In the process, the song became quite dear to me. Marcus & Martin have beautifully weaved my vocal tracks into their rich landscape. Bravo M & M!
