Dave Chappelle is no stranger to controversy since breaking into the national scene in the mid-1990s with his raunchy, off-brand, no holds barred comedy in stand-up routines and films such as his 1998 self-produced and written opus Half-Baked about a bunch of stoners who suddenly get conscious. 

As an icon, his very specific words and actions carry weight worldwide.  Dave has never been shy to share articulacy about what’s on his mind on stage or in interviews.  While this makes him endearing to fans and empathizers it riles the feathers of those who feel they are being attacked.   As audiences come to grips with his jokes about Transgenders, he also has openly invited the LGBTQ+ community to speak with him about these very issues.   

Citing ethical and professional concerns after walking out of his sketch comedy hit on Comedy Central, Chappelle’s Show, his legacy exploded as he made his comeback on Netflix and extensive touring.  Even with his name on the title, it was clearly ‘Not his Show’ as network executives demeaned and demanded inferior work into the show that undervalued his worth.  Similar to the epic rap crew Wu-Tang's the RZA’s frustration with Tommy Boy records in his ‘Prince Rakeem’ era or Minstrel era or Colin Kaepernick’s dilemma with the NFL churning out football players similar to slaveowners.  Black men and women have continually fought through stereotypical anecdotes fueled by white’s inferiority complex.   

A favorite quote from him is, “When a hero stumbles, the cowards rejoice. Nothing feels better to a coward than to watch a brave man fall.”

As a comedian exploring current social issues many times, their jokes will offend someone, that is the very nature of the business.  Done correctly it transcends differences, opens the door to face them head-on, presents a dialogue to explore problem-solving.  Comedians are their best at observing and reporting humanity's best and worst issues.  This is what many other greats have done throughout history.  They are not attempting to ‘punch down’ or demonize others, or even attempting to erase another marginalized group, they are simply opening the context for people to constructively think and understand others' points of view.
