Big Electric Cat - Redux

I know what you're thinking.... I'm just jumping on the Kate Bush/Stranger Things/80s nostalgia bandwagon. Just hear me out.

This "Redux" is an idea I've had for a number of years. I remember hearing the cover done by Placebo one night before heading up to the DNA Lounge in San Francisco (Death Guild), and thought it was a really good cover. It stuck in my head, and I thought it might be nice to do a remix or a redux.. but something a bit "harder" if that makes any sense.

So I sat on this idea for a while, and never really got back to it - life gets complex. And then... Stanger Things comes along, and the song rockets back to the public consciousness.

So I guess you could technically say I'm jumping on the bandwagon. But really, the ST connection was just the final kick in the pants I needed to actually do it.

So there is it.

On this outing... I took a stab at recreating the Vangelis music cue for the "Spinner" sequence from Blade Runner. Not an easy task! This took some deep listening to try and pick out the parts and sounds. I hope you enjoy it, as I'm really pleased with it.

For those that are interested:

I used the VP330 samples from Hollow Sun for the Strings.
The bulk of the heavy lifting is the amazing GX-80 from Cherry Audio.
Arturia Pigments, CS-80V, and Stage-73 V rounded out the rest of the tones.

All recorded and mixed with PreSonus StudioOne

This is a reworking of a song I wrote way back in 2008, and it ended up being the first video I posted to my YT channel. I've learned (and hopefully improved) quite a bit since I recorded the first version. So I when I recently came across the files for this, I decided to revisit it and see what I could do better.

Eye In The Sky (House-Trance Remix)

A modern recreation of the classic Vangelis track "Chung Kuo" from the album China. With the exception of the Hollow Sun VP-330 samples, the bulk of the analog tones are coming from Applied Acoustics Systems Ultra Analog VST (8 instances). The melody line is played on Ichiro Toda's Synth1 VST.

GR300 Helix Patch Demo

An exercise in using musical phrases of different lengths playing against each other. We have some 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, and 7/8 all going at the same time.

A friend of mine was walking at night at a camp in upstate NY. He noticed that as he walked, the keys and other items he was carrying, made a certain rhythm. He happened to record this on his iPhone and shared the file. So this work is based on bit of that recording, looped, stretched and cajoled into time and music.

Oh La La La Grange (Goldfrapp Vs. ZZ Top)

I got a hold of the acapella to Eminem's "Without Me" and just started to goof around with it. As a joke, I looped a section of the rhythm with a section of 'Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes, thinking that the two songs were so far a part, how silly it would be to join them.

Well... it worked. It worked really well! In fact, the more of the tracks I laid on top of each other, the more they clicked – they had same basic verse-chorus structure underneath. So after a few hours (or was it days) of work, some sample hunting and splicing, I had a really great Mashup.

Without You (Eminem Vs Yes, 2010)

Some years ago, I was working on video for the French music software company Arturia. I was working on a demo video for their (new at the time) product, the Arp200V - a virtual Arp 2600 synthesizer. While that project never saw the light of day as it was originally conceived and edited, here is one of the background tracks I did for it. This funky tune uses four instances of the Arp2600V plug-in; bass, keys, lead and even the drums.

A friend of mine recently was suffering from this affliction. And like all good friends, she decided to share the Ear Worm with me. Who knew pop music was so contagious... or dangerous!

So rather than curse her name and go mad, I decided to take this opportunity to remix a current song. For those of you who know me, you know that I tend to remix older tunes so this was chance to try out something new. This is the result.

This track has the classic Dungeon vibe to it. Lots of rattling chains, screams, lighting and other sounds of torture. Always a mood-setter. I designed it to loop, so hit the Repeat button of your favorite player and let it rip.

A few years ago, a some friends of mine went to San Francisco for a anniversary celebration for the Death Guild. One of the gifts they came home with was a CD collection of music from the party and other DG events. After having a listen to the collection, I was inspired to do something with a "harder edge" to it... this Depeche Mode Remix was the result.
