In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. 

The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.

Apeirophobia is derived from the greek 'Apeiron' meaning infinite or indefinite.

This short study for piano trio was written as a response to the existential concept of infinity and our lack of the ability to fully understand or comprehend it. Taking M.C. Escher paintings as a thematic framework and inspiration, the piece has a cyclical structure with the primary motivic material greatly inspired by rotational symmetry. The dense figurations in the piano are fragmented by persistent interruptions of the strings which slowly start to gain power and control until they open out to the more lyrical middle section. From there, the music seemingly starts to move in reverse with an extended fragmented spasmodic section triggering this change. Moving into the final section, we hear the opening material now twisted and distorted with the combined motifs finally disintegrating to white noise which is abruptly cut off.

Written for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's Ensemble 10:10, conducted by Gabriella Teychenné on October 11th, 2023 at the Yoko Ono/John Lennon centre (Tung Auditorium) as part of the Rushworth Composition Prize, supported by the Rushworth Foundation.

‘In Their Wake’ was written in response to Eleanor Rees’s poem ‘Bridie’s Tomb’ from her collection ‘The Well at Winter Solstice’, set in that most peaceful and private place in Liverpool, St James’ Cemetery. I was particularly struck by the phrase “how much of your life, is balanced on the unseen”, that feeling of somehow stepping between two worlds and offering a liminal or transitory alterity, inside of which, we could find meaning and connection between disparate moments in our lives.

I wanted to write a piece that, like this poem, could somehow express this sense of transition and renewal whilst also reflecting the joys and experience of life in all its facets. There are moments of repose integrated among the often propulsive, florid and energetic textures which offer a solitude much like the setting of ‘Bridie’s Tomb’. Following the final of these, there is an acceleration towards an impression of almost painful, pure ecstatic joy as the voices heard in that peaceful setting were finally able to speak their long held traumas from their lives.

Finalist in the Ryan Leach April 2024 Composing Competition. 

I wanted to try to capture the feeling of approaching the island of Mont Saint-Michel and seeing that majestic structure rising up out of the water. I started with a short motivic idea on a solo flute as we first spot the island on the horizon. As the full size and beauty of it is revealed upon our approach, this idea is carried forward into the entire orchestra finally heralding our arrival to the island.
